Good morning to one and all.

I'm after a little bit of help/information please.

I have a reasonable flash for low light/night photography. What I'm thinking of is whether a flash such as the canon 270ex would be suitable for a daytime 'fill flash'please?? Thinking of primarily outdoor shots of people where there may be slight backlighting.

Any help/comments gratefully received!!

I don't know what you have already, but I'd recommend a more powerful flash for shooting in the sun. You have to remember that you're competing with the ambient which is often bright. The 270ex will be OK for close distances, but I'd just buy a more powerful flash that's more use in different conditions. tilt and swivel head and HSS if your current flash doesn't do it.
 
I have a 270EX, and it's a great little gun. I use it for exactly your purpose, when I can't be doing with a bigger flash - it's wonderfully pocketable. It also has high-speed sync, rare at this level, and limited bounce facility.

It's also more powerful than the spec suggests, but as Phil says, it's still not a powerful gun and needs to be used at close range. In HSS mode, even when quite close it will be working hard and the recycle is then slow. Indoors using bounce you can push the ISO and get by for basic stuff, but it's not ideal.

I wouldn't be without it, but for more serious work, I use a 580EX (or three) :)
 
I currently have a Metz 58 as my 'big' flashgun. This can be bulky to carry about, particularly mounted to the body when in busy areas.

When I had a 7D, I found the pop up flash handy at times for close ups of 'er indoors if we were out and about as a fill flash for headshots when there may have been some background light.

My current body doesn't have a pop up flash so thought the 270ex may be a handy,portable, not too bulky alternative.
