Hi All,

I think I have got the grip of balancing ambient light with my new flash (430ex2). What I am doing with this is taking a reading from the ambient light, then underexposing by two stops and playing with the flash output untill I get what I like (someone tell me if I am way out here).

Is there a similar method that I should be looking at for fill flash? So if I am doing portraits outdoors in sunshine, I want to use the flash to remove shaddows from the face etc.

Look forward to your replies.

Paul

You can use the first technique outdoors to darken the sky.

For normal outdoor fill you wouldn't underexpose the scene (you may want to overexpose, for a backlit subject) but you'll have the flash output reduced to taste and use high speed sync ("FP") in most cases. HSS will reduce the range so don't use a diffuser and cut it further. With the flash output below ambient there's less need for diffusion.

ok - I think that makes sense.. will have a play..

so much information with regrads to flash, its hard reading sometimes.
