Couple of size file questions:

#1 - Im editing some RAW files (each approx 22mb).
Im saving as Jpegs.
Some shots are being edited into B&W.
The saved jpegs are coming out relatively small at around 2-6mb. They're all saved at 300dpi, 3456 x 5148.
They're going to be printed approx A5 size. Am i right in thinking the file size isn't that important and they'll be fine? I realise they're smaller than usual because B&W means less information in the pic.

#2 - One or two of the images may be used on a large (10ftx10ft) multi TV screen. What would be the best way of saving an image to be used that big?

Cheers, hope i make sense

Dan

DPI is immaterial in the JPEG - only when you render.

A5 is approx 8"x5.5". That means your 5148 pixels will get printed into 8" or 643 pixels per inch. Most printers print at 300dpi (dpi becomes important when you print it), so they'll throw away over 3/4 of the information.

The 10x10 will need to be blown up, but it will depend on how far away it is viewed. Have a look at this post: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=4433086&postcount=4 as it gives some explanation of pixels per inch and dots per inch.

Hi Dan,

very rough rule of thumb for printing at 300 dpi:-
1 MP approximates 10 square inches of print
so A5, approx 8"x6" = 48 sq inches = 5 mpixels

this rule does overestimate by about 10%.

regarding the 10ft image, do you know the display resolution? also, sharpening is normally turned up a little for displays, so may want to make a copy with more sharpening.

take it easy dan
