File numbering problem

Today I decided to do some lens tests, and put a formatted card in my 1Ds mk3. This has had about 6100 actuations, and the main file has not been reset, so the file no showing on the card was this number. I then transferred the same card to my 40D and shot off another bunch of shots, and I find that the file no hasn't taken on the no of shots that my 40D has done (only about 1000) it's continued on from where the 1 Ds left off!! I then put another formatted card in the 40D and it's not reverted to it's true no of actuations, so it looks as if the 40D has had 6000+ actuations now and not the true reading of approx 1000!
I don't think there is any way this can be reset, can anyone help, otherwise when I come to sell it it will have a totally misleading no of actuations showing on it!

Think you can do it by renumbering/renaming a file on a card using the computer then put it in the camera and it will carry on from that file number... or something like that :)
 
It can be reset, I wrote a thread on this a long time ago.

1)Format your CF card
2)Reset your 40D to zero using the camera menus.
3)Copy the last image you took on the 40D from your computer back to the CF card
4) Reset the 40D to File Numbering CONTINUOUS
5) Put the card back into the 40D and take a shot

Your now back to where you should be.

In fact you can make it start counting again from ANY number by renaming the image number on the CF before putting it back in the 40D
 
Mark, thanks a lot for that, I must admit I hadn't done a search on the forum. However, if you reset the file to zero, doesn't it open a new master file? I'd also like to know why it happens at all!!
