Just wondering, what to people feel is the best way to structure folders and name files? My context (don't want to name names) is that I shoot *sports team* specifically (as oppose to shooting a variety of different teams) and that team has a 1st team, a 2nd team a women's team and a youth team. So how would (or how do you for your teams) organise your folder structure and filenames?

(Sidenote: feel like I'm starting to get a rep for asking stupid questions, so sorry if that's the case)

Every time I download images from camera to computer the new folder is given a number like 457, then whenever I edit a image DSC-5234 out of that folder the image is re-saved with the folder number and image number like 457-5234, this way I know exactly where the original image came from. Well it works for me.

try Team Name_1st Team_Opposition_01 or Team Name_Reserves_Opposition_01 etc

Similar to Andy, but I file by date code first, ie:

YYYY_MM_DD_Team/Event/Client

All of the images are filed in there then reviewed either using Faststone or PM and the selected files moved to a subfolder called YYYY_MM_DD_Team_Picks before importing to Lightroom.

On import all the files are keyworded with team names, sport/event type, date etc so that I can search for them easily if necessary. After processing and further filtering the final images are exported to a parallel sub folder called (surprise surprise) Export.

It's not a practical workflow for uploading in the field, but on the rare occasion that I do need to , I'll follow through the above later on so that I can reference the images later if needed.

In essence it doesn't matter how you file, as long as you are consistent and can find what you need efficiently without having to open a shed load of files.

I have got a main folder named Southend Rugby Club --> Season 2010-11 --> Individual match folders, 01-Ealing (h), 02-Newbury (a) etc.

Inside each match folder I keep all my keepers fom the match and another folder called Club_Website where I keep the one's I've "saved for web" and sent to the media officer for the website/press.

My individual file's are named after the opponents ie "Henley_(h)_01, 02..." or "Richmond_(a)_01, 02...." etc.

Now if someone says I want picture "????" I can go to the relevant match folder and find it.
