I have decided to try and use RAW, for a couple of shots I chose RAW and jpeg fine, came to load them into PS CS3 extended - I know it has the camera RAW converter but the programme tells me "its not the right type of document"
I have used RAW on this camera D700 and the ps (I copied and paste the images into a folder)

not sure why its not recognising the image, file ext is NEF (I can view them on the laptop)

NEF is the file extension for Nikon RAW images

when i first loaded Photoshop Elements v7 ----i had to download/install a plug-in for my ''specific'' camera - a D5000 ---- before Elements would open the file

.NEF is Nikon Electronic File. Try updating your Adobe Camera Raw. Older versions of Photoshop/Elements may not recognise .NEF's from more recent cameras.

The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack enables the viewing of a variety of device-specific file formats in Window Live Photo Gallery as well as other software that is based in Windows Imaging Codecs (WIC).
Installing this package will allow supported RAW camera files to be viewable in Windows Explorer.

I am fairly sure that ViewNX which comes free with all Nikon DSLRs has a raw converter for .NEF files, if you cannot find the disc you can download it from the Nikon website for free.
 
Thanks everybody for your replies,
I have down loaded the Nikon NEF codec converter and can now see the image on my laptop, but even though in photoshop when I open the file it now recognises it as a thumbnail, when I try to import it into ps it still does not recognise the file. The ps came with the laptop so not sure what to do.

any ideas
