Fifty Two.. - Project catch up! 3 new weeks done..

Well this week has been hectic. My computer is playing up massively and after 3 formats and 5 different operating systems, hours and hours of trial and error.. my USB ports on my motherboard no longer work! That means I can't do anything on it.. I'm using it using an old PS/2 keyboard and mouse and had to use my Linux laptop to transfer the images from the camera.. then transfer them over the network to the computer!

What a stress. Also spent a lot of time trying to sort out my work placement for my degree.. I've contacted about 50 local companies and all have said no, they're all either too busy or have no work coming in, thus no need for extra hands. More annoyingly, my placement is unpaid!

Well, here's my week 6, Special!

I've always been a Nintendo fan. Ever since I was 4 years old, stealing my older brother's Gameboy and hiding upstairs with it. Something about the Nintendo 64 make it just that bit more special than all the other consoles..

I find it funny that, even today well over a decade old, the N64 shows up in so many bedrooms. I don't know a single student flat tht doesn't own one! It must be pretty special to even be favoured over the new Xbox and PS3!

So here's my theme picture and my tribute to a fantastic console! No it didn't have the best graphics, but the gameplay was unbeatable. No fancy graphics could ever beat the fun of Mario Kart with a bunch of friends!

Nice one, my youngest also a Nintendo fan has every model of DS that has ever been made and still plays on them all.

I like the composition, but from a mum's point of view I would have liked to see the machine dust free :naughty:

well don for getting it done on what has been a stressful week :clap:

Thanks you two :) Ok, it was the best console of my generation then! :D

Very dusty I know.. and that was after I'd gave it a quick dusting!! Maybe that was intentional.. to err, symbolise that just because it's an old dusty console, it doesn't make it any worse than the shiney new ones!

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Couldn't agree more...

Super Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64.

Pure class

Ahh Youth :)

After my time (I was excited by Space Invaders and Asteroids and there it stopped :))

But I can see why its special to you Jamie and your image does it justice! Nicely composed and lit!

:)

Very good shot Jamie. I like your take on the theme, as for Mario Kart, I've not tried it on the 64, but it's great on the Wii and DS

Well I've actually gotten mine in well before the end of the week this time!

I was really struggling to think of things for this week.. I thought of doing a.. what's the word, where there's three photos in the frame. Of three different types of crowds, but time constraints meant this wasn't possible to do during this week.

Then I came up with the idea of this!

week 7 - "Crowds"
"Two's Company.."

Things I've learned this week:

Consistant shots, with the same settings and same flash power, etc. seem to be impossible. All the shots seemed to very slightly differ in lightness.. Anyone care to shed some light on this one? (sorry! :p )

Portrait shots don't have to be serious and moody. I actually had a lot of fun shooting this one!

A good tripod is essential. If I were using my old tripod, it would have kept moving slightly, meaning shots were out of line. My redsnapper is great!

f8 is fantastic. I'd like to try and use it more often, than just sticking with either really high numbers or really low.

It seems that on a timer shutter, it autofocuses straight after pressing the button, not just before the shot. that was slightly annoying.

C&C welcome as always! I thought I'd try something that's pretty new to me and have a go at a quirky version of portrait photography, rather than my usual macros that I do :)

I agree :D, and you'd expect to see a bit of dust on something old :naughty:

Love the crowds :) excellent idea and well excuted its good to try stuff you haven't done before :)

That is excellent! I didn't even consider the 2s Company, 3s a Crowd approach!

And you've really done it well :) Great poses and a seamless piece of PP

Well done, love it! :)

:agree: Really well executed and way beyond my skill level.:clap::clap:

Ditto and another idea bites the dust!!

I am about ready to chuck my computer with elements 6 out the window today :bat: never mind coming up with stuff like your photo

well done :clap::clap::clap:

Week 5 I very much like. Intersting to hear the thought process behind it too.
Week 7 I like too. Great expressions.

Great shot(s) jamlid and really well executed. The only thing I can think of that may have given you slightly different light shades would be the use of auto White Balance. I'm sure that would have been fairly easy to fix in PP though.

Rob: Thanks for the info :) What would be best to shoot on? Use a fixed setting like Daylight, etc. instead or try using the user set feature? (Something I've never used before and have no idea what it does!)

Everyone: Thanks very much for the kind words! Constructive feedback is always welcome :) How could I improve the composition? Or how could I improve it on all of my shots so far? It's one thing I really need to work on.

Ah sod it! I've just managed to sort out a willing victim for tonight to shoot my idea and I come on here and something similar has been done :( poop :lol:

Ah well, I might just do it anyway :D:D

Very good photo by the way  I like the expressions as well

Thanks Kelack! Doesn't mean you can't do it :) We're bound to share ideas with a few people on here, I'm sure your take on it will be different :)

This is cool - photography is supposed to be inspiring and this makes me want to go and try something along these lines after I've had my tea... I like :)

reminds me of a shot I took a while back....

Given more time and a brighter day I was going to attempt something where I was standing loads of times "crowd-like" in a playing field.....

Nice and well done, the first thing I thought of was this when I saw it was going to be crowds...glad I didn't go for it in the end as I don't look at anybody else on here till I've done my own shot...

But to be honest I think you have pulled it off better than I could have...

Thats a great fun shot - and something I certainly don't have the skills for at the moment. Well done

What I like about this is (as well as the sheer cleverness of it!) is the expressions. They say "2s company" so clearly - it's really well posed.

It's a great interpretation of the theme. If I got really picky I'd say could you have moved the sofa over to our left a bit so the door (?) on the right was out of shot? It all gets a bit dark on the right and having the light coloured wall behind would have lifted it a little. :)

Jean

You've pulled off a great fun shot and done the processing on it very well. It's also a clear interpretation of the theme.

Great shot, nice interpretation and very well executed. Well done.

week 8 - Wealth

Well, here's my entry for this week! I've had ideas from the start of the week. My initial plan was not to show wealth, but the lack of.

I had fun shooting this!

Things I learned:
even if you have a remote shutter, dropping coins INTO a jar, while pressing the button on time is hard.
I need to learn to capture the coins falling sharper.. I was using 1/180 so sync speed won't let me go faster.. flash at 1/32nd. How can I sort this?
My mum's white plastic coffee table makes an excelent item table for photos!

The jar is nicely lit and I think the falling coins have worked well. The whiter patch top left is a tad distracting - maybe process it out? Nice one.

the little hearts on the jar add a nice touch and i dont think it matters that the falling coins aren't sharp :)

Thanks :) Sorry, I don't know what you mean by the whiter patch top left? Don't know if it's just my monitor that I can't see it or something?

toothie: thanks! :)

I can see it as well - top left. It was the one thing I was going to pick up on as it is a bit distracting. Other than that I really like the lighting - must have been tricky with all the glass and shiny things!

I'll have a look at it on my laptop to see if I can see it then :)

EDIT: ahhhh! That was caused by me.. on this computer, the background of the photo is pure white. On my laptop, it's got a slight blue tinge to it :) I shall configure my gamma and sort it. Thanks! I wouldn't have realised otherwise.

Sorted, replaced the original photo with the updated version.. But it seems like it's unavailable on Flickr? Is everyone else unable to see it?

I really like the simplicity of this shot (although I realise it wasn't simple to take)

Nice clean image with good clarity. well done :clap::clap:

I agree, very nice and clean, simple, clear image

I agree too, a clean, well taken image that fits the brief well.
