If enough people will pay for the service they'll do it. Work paid for "virgin" fibre to be run in and they re-layed our block paved car park. Believe it or not they had a dedicated specialist team :-/
It does depend on the network too. Fibre to the cab is easy to install as the infrastructure is already in place to fibre the cab up. The distribution side will remain the same and be provided over your existing copper line.
FTTP will be over a decade away for a lot. You will probably see more poles being built and fibre being delivered overhead.
ROI for businesses is quicker so you can guess what they're pushing for.
It'll be good to see what area's VM roll out their FTTH

Fortunately our office was a data centre in a previous life. We did have to pay for the other end of what was our old les100 to be layed back in the day. From what I hear it wasn't cheap

That's ironic coming from the man who always defends Apple pricing by saying they're a company who need to make money...Which is what BT is. A company - trying to make money (although you do wonder with the bureaucracy sometimes).
I didn't say it didn't make sense or it was bad business.

Absolutely no chance of having fibre optic cable here, they stopped laying it about half a mile down the lane. To lay from the telephone cabinet to my place means means digging a trench across Pelsall common north and somehow under a canal.

That's where fibre to the cab helps so you can still get a decent speed if the built one
