Fewer Poppy fields this year?

Lots on verges and banks though, I suspect it's the rain. Many fields are rather wet and the banks and verges drain better. They could still come if the weather improves over the next couple of weeks.

I've noticed what looks like poppy fields is often an oilseed field with a weed problem, that would likely be a combination of factors like too dry/too wet when herbicide was applied - so won't happen every year.
I think there are less set-aside fields too but some fields will have uncropped buffer strips by streams or sow game cover crops which will also be quite weedy.

Possibly the one just down the road from me was a riot of colour last year but this year nothing

If you're referring to the Blackstone poppy fields Nigel then you'll now find it the other side of the old Stourport branchline.

You'll also find far less tourists there too and less of a police presence too.

You won't find any sunshine though :(

Now this is the information that I could have done with two day's ago :(

Im thinking about buying a few killo of seeds and going dropping them on a field round the corner.

with the weather we have had for the past 6 weeks most flowers are having a bit of a strange time, all the seedlings and plants i have put in my garden are very slow (a good 4 weeks or more out) by the end of this week the weather is getting hotter again and more sun so it should help a bit of catch-up, even the poppies i have planted this year are slow and not yet flowered.

I havent seen any this yea, but be to be fair I havnt been looking.
I have noticed the banks of green through where I work is covered with poppys.

 Could someone do that at the Chesterton windmill? The greens are rather boring

There's a permanent 'poppyfield' near to where I live, and I got excited about visiting it, only to find that it's a stables yard called 'poppyfield'. Hmmm, bit of a letdown after that. There's a few poppies and they're all sorts of different colours with a purple/mauve colour being my favorite at the minute.

Blackstone poppies may not have the sunnyside this time, but it does seem to give the poppies good colour with the moody skies we are gettiing, plus steam train in pic if you wait long enough.

Had a very enjoyable couple of hours there the other day I was quite suprised at how well they had held up to the rain.

Poppies I have in my garden have taken a battering, knocking off the petals much sooner than normal.

Definitely the weather this year is the cause....

I'd love to see that ;) I'd be there even more than I already am :D agree this years crop is boring as hell and what's more the wide gap between the path and the crop really is messing up the shot's from that angle :bang:

This is because to many people are walking in amongst his crop Matt, especially around the mill itself...!
I saw it the other day in fact, 3 people trouncing all over his crop.. It's his livelihood at the end of the day and some people don't give a dam..

That is indeed and issue mate, though I suspect a issue of lack of countryside awareness the same people are the type that will leave gates open, light BBQ's, allow there dog's to run free around life stock etc...always a shame when the few spoil it for the many :( if I walk into a farmers crop to get a shot and I do, I make sure I'm walking only in the track lines even though that nearly always means the longer route :bang:

As much as I like photography, and I can understand the allure of red fields. I'm delighted that the hundreds of pounds I have spent. Combined with the dry autumn and wet spring have killed all the poppies in my crops.

It's embarrassing when the neighbours fields are green, and my own are turning red.:whistling:

From what I see, hear and read, it is mainly the south-east that is lacking in poppy fields this year. Some good ones over in the west and up north. Think it is down to the wetter weather we have generally had down here. Still time though.

There's a good field off M4 jun 18 heading towards bath. Also spotted a really nice field on the A420 towards oxford last night, on the Swindon side of Kingston Bagpuise near the services.

I'd agree with the south east comment. Nothing doing down my way at all :(

I've only seen them on the verges :( still got my eyes peeled though and ears open in case I see or hear of any fields south east :)

We have loads around this year far more than ive ever noticed, winchester, arylesford, ropley, micheldever.... We have a few down here

Huge field of poppies never seen before next to the hospital in Newbury. Maybe they are all coming out now due to the weather.

Would be most greatful if you could add them to this on-going google map of poppyfield locations. Note that you can also add other fields of flowers.
