Yes
During a recent conversation I was mocked because of what I believe to be a regional use of grammar. :)

As an answer to a question I responded with....."sure, I'll fetch it with me", My reply was met with titters as that reply would have been delivered as "sure, I'll bring it with me"

Now.....is either reply incorrect?

Do you notice regional deviations of dialect during your everyday comings and goings?

I know it's a silly little topic, but it's had me thinking for a couple of days......that's NO easy thing to achieve :D

You bring something with you, you go and fetch something.

aye, but if your going somewhere with the "thing" your technically fetching it to the other party.

I see where your coming from there dod and that's what I was doing....fetching something for them :)

In college I have a friend (cue many quotes ) who is from Runcorn and he comes out with some wierd words for things like 'that is boss'. I think it means it is very good

Bring is a one way operation.

Fetch is two way, you go somewhere to get it then bring it back :D

Just noticed my post count is 2500 , can I have it frozen please as it looks good :D

All the way down here I would say "I will bring it with me" or "bring it along"

The dog fetches things that I have thrown ( and things that I haven't :D )

There speaks Cobra from "The Land of the Concrete Spam Tins" , and I think you mean amateur

No I meant A mature gentleman

:suspect:

stop abusing my thread or i'll have to go and fetch a can of whoop ass.

Tch. tch ...I bet when DF throws sticks for the dog he shouts... "BRING!!!"" :D

PMSL ( well very nearly anyway)
Still "bring it here" would be legitimate surly

If the dog had it in its mouth then yes, but if it hadn't picked it up yet then it would be fetch :geek:

Still my GSP ( German short-haired pointer) doesn't speak a word of English
( and I no German)
So I guess its largely immaterial

Hmmm.. either or, I think (at least where I'm from :) )

I'm always getting pulled up about alot of the words I use (it's hard being a northerner living in the south!). One that springs to mind is my use of the word 'while' rather than 'whilst' eg 'Can you do this while I do that'. Sounds perfectly normal to me  Also saying t' alot (instead of to) and not pronouncing the letter 'h' - we don't seem to have that letter in the alphabet in Yorkshire

So 2 pages in and the topic is still unclear

I think us northerners should just declare victory and deem the south to be talking another language :D

:lol: The bit of the north I come from has no 'h' either....well, not unless its on the name Ellen, the word up, or several other places it was never intended to be.:bonk:

As the the original post, I send my dog to fetch but I personally bring something with :D

Fetch is a two way strech, bring is a one way thing.

As for local sayings, I still remember being asked if I had my piece with me when I first moved to the Highland. How the heck was I to know it was a packed lunch / sarnies they were referring to.

Well, in my part of Scotland we understand the difference :D
