Festival photography.

Does anybody do this?
Would be great to hear some general tips if anyone has anything they can offer that maybe i haven't thought of.


I have managed to wangle myself an AAA pass for a three day music festival, though i am not working for anyone but myself so i am free to do whatever i like.

So i expect i will be doing a mixture of stuff, mainly getting shots of the artists and performers for use in my portfolio, and also of the punters to try and make some sales.

I'll be going armed with a 5d, 1dmk2, 17-40L, 50 f1.8 and 70-200L f2.8 IS.

Could do with picking up a couple more batteries, particularly for the 1d as the ones i have are a bit ropey. Got plenty of cards though.

But other than that, is there anything i could do with that maybe i have forgotten? I expect i won't need any more reach as with the AAA pass i'll be able to get right up close.

never done it myself - but i can vouch for the AAA pass. By brother is a session guitarist and he wangled a few passes recently as the agent for a group he was with is also agent for Scissor Sisters, Queens of the Stone Age and a few others....

he said it was AMAZING to get that kind of access. No heirs and graces or ego's going on.. just a chilled out atmos with great food, a few beers and good banter. You will have an absolute ball!

And i would imagine the kit you listed would be more than suffice. Enjoy!

I recently went to the Wickerman Festival. I actually managed to get hold of a pass from a sound engineer through a friend.... so, basically, make lots of friends if you cant get one officially and it's usually pretty easy to get back stage... How did you manage this?! I've tried quite a few festivals with no success at all. The official line seems to be "You need to produce ID to show you work in the press"

It's a relatively small festival, nothing like Glastonbury or anything like that.

I have spent a couple of years working in nightclubs so made a few contacts that way, one of the DJ's i know through that is the organiser for this festival.

Hopefully if i make a good job of this, i'll have something to use in my favour to try and get in with a magazine or something for some bigger festivals next year.
