Female togs and male togs

Following on from mobilevirgin's thread, do you think that the general public accept solo female photographers as opposed to the male equivalent?

You know what I'm saying? Males might be seen as paedophiles whereas females (being generally viewed as 'nurturing' - sorry for the sweeping generalisation) might be viewed as just being out there to take pics

I'm actually a tad concerned about going out on my own tomorrow :(

Your thoughts?
 
Yes, I do. But that's also a bit of a generalisation. The point has been raised before and some of the women on here have said that they have never had the issues that some of the men have had.

Don't be put off though. Just be aware of what's going on around you.
 
Thought about this many times Marky and have come to the conclusion that female togs have it very easy compared to our male counterparts, particularly in terms of street and/or candid. It saddens me a great deal :(
 
I think maybe there is an element of truth in it. I have never had a problem, even when carrying two cameras slung round my neck. I have frequently pointed the camera at landscape or piece of architecture, and mum and kids have either walked through or into shot and just not cared that I am obviously pointing the camera at them, albeit that I didnt really want them there. IN fact the ONLY time I was questioned was when out with a group of 5 TP men down near the london eye, and even that was security guard just checking we weren't commercial togs :lol:
 
In my experience the general public assume that a female tog with an SLR is someones wife/gf who's borrowed it, no matter how tooled up they are or experianced they look, only a press vest can change that. on the other hand, they assume a man with a half decent camera is either up to no good or a pro... (come on how many "pro togs" are 18 year olds in cut off jeans and DM's?)

Looks like I'll have to drag out the old Laura Ashley print dress, shave me legs, and put on some make-up

Shame that, but its true.

I totally agree with the OP, I have never had any problems (yet) with the 70-200mm round my neck, kids in view, taking pics of kids etc, nothing has ever been said.

Women trust other women. Women dont trust men with huge lenses near their dear offspring, its the sad truth. In my experience anyways.

well it looks like you 2 will be better off taking photos at the weekend then;)


I have never been chalanged by anyone and i often walk along the stand that has a play park

On a slightly different note, in my experience so far I've found female togs to have an excellent creative eye especially when browsing photos on flickr. Maybe they see things different from guys? :)

I've seen it mentioned numerous times, but I've no idea what it is
