Yes
with it being such a nice bright sunny evening on Wednesday, I went to visit the deer at Bushy Park, one of the royal parks in south west London - thought it might be nice to try and get some pics of the rut.

I was doing just fine, got a few resonalbe pics while keeping a reasonable distance away. The atmostphere was like nothing else I've ever experienced what with their calls and challenges. Anyway, I was done and was making my way back to the car when on going round a corner I suddenly found myself face to face with a real big Stag, no more than 4, maybe 5 metres away. He looked up and that was it, he took 3 or 4 paces in my direction and stabbed me in the tum. thorwing me to the ground. I manage to hold on to his antlers to stop him doing it again and I felt him relax so I let go. He took a pace backwards and then came at me again, puttting a couple of real deep holes in the top of my leg, forcing his head round, smashing the oppersite antler across my back. Again I managed to hold him down, only this time when he relaxed I held on a bit longer. Thankfully when I did eventually let go he just scarpered.

Am bruised and achey all over, and have stiches to the two very deep holes in my leg. Not feeling too great right now - moving about is absolute agony. It doesn't much feel like it right now, I reckon I've been very lucky really

yes, yes. never mind that. What about the camera gear?

Yes, AND did they get any good shots of the Stag attacking him, especially a leg goring shot? :D

Ps: Glad you're ok too :)

Bloody Hell!

All in a days work for a wildlife tog. :D

Seriously - glad you're OK.

Flippin eck - I was gonna take a wonder there tomorrow for much the same purpose, not sure I am so keen now!

Sounds nasty and as though it could have been even worse! Glad to hear you got out in one (slightly battered) piece!

The lengths people go to for a picture!!!

Hope you start feeling better soon.

crikey that's a bit scary

probably better that you didn't try to run away

Glad you've survived far enough to share this.

Seriously, that must have been a horrible experience; but (and that is one BIG BUT), just think when all the pains and aches are gone .. what a wonderful story you've got yourself. It's moments like that, which make us feel wonderful about life.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

wow, hope you recover quick (from another injured tog)

I lost count the number of times deer have stampeded in my direction, and I've had to hide behind trees, or lay down and got jumped over. Luckily none was ever in rutting season or I'd be a lot worse off I think. They were always happy just to run on away from me.

Show us the pics? :P

Something like that is of interest to the public, could be an earner in it if you contact the news media.

The tabloids would love it.

It is kind of on a par with being able to talk about a duelling scar innit! :D

thanks guys - think its gonna be quite sometime before I can laugh at this though :(

apart from being pretty muddy, I think my camera is OK, but TBH not really had the inclination to go checking it out properly just yet

BTW, sorry its a crap pic, but I think this is the attacker

The dangers of photography eh ;)

Glad you're ok though :)

I see you've done some PP there - here's the original shot:

Sorry, I couldn't resist!! :D Get well soon!! :)

Get well very soon.

Look forward to Brutus' head lining the wall of a pub with the rest of him on the menu! (oh you can't do that to Royal Deer can you :( )

You were only trying to capture his 'good side'

You are lucky , there are references to fatalites caused by rutting deer , think it was a Roebuck killed a farmer/keeper some years ago.
You just never know , I had to shoot a bull once that had escaped ( going to slaughter house ) and it wern"t very happy.
Collegue shot a stag like the one that had you after it escaped from deer park.
Hope you are ok.
Claims direct ?;)

i feel sorry for you but i have to agree this forum hasnt shown much sympathy in this case. However we will try and not make you laugh to much!

I can think of better ways to have a Stag night!
:coat:

Glad you're not too badly hurt, feller, he looks like a mean mutha!

dont tell the papers, the Daily Mail will launch a campaign to have all stags culled as they could potentially hurt someone...

we need pics of horrendous injuries...

OOOOH YEEEEEESSSSSS!

glad youre OK, but at the same time its kinda cool to have had a fight with a stag!

What!!!!kinda cool!!!!! would scare the poo out of me, think I will give Bushy Park a miss for a while. Oh deer oh deer, :D Sorry, glad your OK though could have been nasty, I didnt realise the bugg**s where so big. Regards Jim

Well the good news is that my leg seems to have almost stopped leaking from around the stitches, and my back is nowhere near as achey this morning either so at least moving to sit up is a bit easier now. The bruising on my arm has come out in a dirty looking black/grey colour and is still a bit sore, but its my leg muscles around the stiches thats still giving me alot of trouble - no bruising showing there so far, but its very painful, quite red and very warm to the touch. Walking is a more than a bit difficult but at least I'm on the mend :D

Self, self that's all you can think about. With a missed photo opportunity like that don't expect don't sympathy at Talk Photography stop your winging - its only [your] flesh and blood.

Glad to hear that you are on the mend as the rut has not yet finished so that there will be more photo opportunities,
