Hey!
My name's Ross I'm just getting into photography...I say that..I Don't actually own a camera at the minute however at the end of this month I will be purchasing a Fed 3 because I like the look and am a bit unconventional...I like to be different! (Can be good can be bad)

I like the idea of using film so I have a hard copy of all of my work, but I do have one query will I need to do all processing myself...if so...HOW?! haha its one side I have not yet looked into! is it expensive? complicated...can a rookie such as myself read a few guides and give it a go in a trial and error manner or will I end up blowing lots of money and getting nowhere?

Soviet, or more exactly Ukrainian evolution model of Leica II.
This version of Fed rangefinder camera was manufactured between 1962 and 1964
It has like its origin a focal plane shutter. B - 1- 1/500. Film advance using a knob .No light meter but a self timer and a flash contact.
Mk 2 was
was manufactured between 1964 and 1980.had been redesigned and film advance was now carried out with an advance lever. Otherwise the technical is identical to earlier model. Bad point is that the new design might be more modern but not so pretty.
The shutter must be wound first, only then can you set the correct speed. Without cocking first you may severely damage the shutter.
 
I see thanks I appreciate the help but in all honesty Chaz what you just said didn't mean much to me, other than I'd better make damn sure I wind the shutter first,

but at least you know what i'm talking about!

...are you familiar with the Zenit E? In your opinion which of the two would be a better starter camera? Or neither!?

Removable multi-element Industar 61 f/2.8 lens (interchangeable with Leica lenses - M39 mount)
Aperture range from f/2.8 – f/16
Shutter speeds from 1/2 – 1/500 of a second, 1 second, B-mode setting
Self-timer function for those group portraits!

I've done a large amount of reading up on them both and thankfully they both come with instruction manuals!

I'd like a camera that has that Old, Vintage, Classic feel but is not restricted to that specific medium...perhaps I cant get that from one film camera maybe a digital accompanied by some editing software but I'd really like to have the knowledge of a film camera under my belt, any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Im just south of Manchester, whereabouts in Co Durham are you, ive a frend that goes to Consett on a semi regular basis, takes about 1 and a half housr in a car.

I f you want to come over and have a look feel free, I have a collection of Russian cameras, also a few others that I dont use too often, come and have a play.

I have a spare Helios 44-2 lens you can have if you want it.

I also have a couple of dubious quality Russian lenses. One is an almost wide angle 37mm and the other is a huge 135mm thing. They are all pre-set manual aperture.

You can have any or all of them for the cost of postage. I might have a Zenit body going spare too.

That sounds great! but yeah I dont have a car...and dont particularly fancy a 2 hour train journey as i've google maps-ed (is that right?) it, and its a fair way but I appreciate the offer! however Consett is not far from me! Could possibly arrange a transaction with your friend? meet somewhere? as i say it'll have to be beginning of december sometime...

That's awesome too! You want to check postage costs, i'd be more than happy! I feel like a right sponger but I really do appreciate the help, I'll happily take them all off your hands!

Am I allowed to post in the Classifieds? Given that i'm a new member and have a substantially low post count?
 
I don't think the FED3 will be the best camera for you right now. Without lightmeter it would be hard to get nice exposed pictures. Don't forget this camera won't show you the imediate results in it LCD hehe.

Try the Zenit first. You have two advantages in my opinion. First is the lightmeter (if it is working good), second is thar it is a SLR. What you see in the viewfinder is what you have in your photo. FED is Rangefinder. The viewfinder is not aligned with the lens so you have one factor named paralax. (I don't know if in english is the correct nomination).

Just my opinion, as you said you are rookie. :)

No, thank you thats very helpful as yet I hadn't been told if either was good for me...but if the Zenit is better I will give that a go...but given that I was going to spend 120 on a Fed3 i cant pass up on one for 20, I could get it as an investment :) Thank you

Well your talking two different cameras here now I had Zenit E ( called the Zenith in uk) the first Zenit-E was 1967 there was a B which was with out the meter.
This was a SLR and had M42 thread (or Praktica thread)lens fittings
Up until the Switching to the Pentax K mount on the Zenit-122K
The early Zenit E with Industar 50-2 50/3.5 Lens and Selenium-cell lightmeter
