I had to laugh recently, a couple of female friends posted on FB that they were watching 50 shades at the cinema.
My reply, must be a s*** film then if you are "on" Face book

As for me, if I'm out to dinner, (or some such) I'd likely leave the phone behind or at worse switch it off.
Mind you, if you are at a noisy party and you can't hear your self speak, texting the person next to you maybe an option

If I am having a romantic dinner with a beautiful woman I use my phone to check facebook to make sure the wife is nowhere near.

The only times I've had my phone ready to answer during mealtimes were when close family members were on their deathbeds. Keep forgetting the thing these days!

When I am with other people, my phone stays in my pocket.

When I am on my own like I am now in a giraffe restaurant, my phone is used for browsing and communicating.

However there are a number of tables with couples on having a less of a conversation than me. Their phones aren't out, just not talking.

That is a perfectly acceptable use of a mobile phone in a social setting. I can particularly recommend repeated calls (make sure you withhold your number...) to the annoyee, hanging up as soon as they get their phone out of the pocket/case and are JUST about to answer it - assuming the call receiver is in sight. Used to be more fun when car phones were bolt in and far from portable - wait for the person to lock the car and put the keys back in their pocket, call, hang up just as they open the door. Repeat. Lots!
