FE lock on a Canon 650d

I see to use FE lock on my camera I have to use the * button.

As this button is the one currently used for Back button focussing what are the implications of this.

What if necessary is the best work around.

Check the manual, usually when you set * to focus you have a choice of function for AE lock.

Hi Phil the manual really isnt clear on this at all.

The options seem to be

AF/AE LOCK
AE LOCK / AF **** this is the setting for back button focussing
AF/AF LOCK NO AE
AE/AF NO AE LOCK

Must confess I dont understand the settings Im not using one little bit !!

The second one uses the shutter button half press as AE lock and the last one also has AF on the * but with no AE lock.
