FD - EOS Compatability Help

I have been offered a Canon 500/600mm L lens but it's an FD fit. Will this work on my 40D with the correct adaptor. I'm not too fussed about AF/MF but will the image quality be effected.

At present I don't have full details of the lens but the mate who is selling it on behalf of a relative of his (sounds dodgy but it's not, I have known him for years) is away on business at the moment. From what he has told me on the phone, from his recollection of the lens, it is definately a Canon 500 or 600mm prime lens, white in colour (L??) and has a goldish sticker on it with FD thereon, possibly F5.6. The relatives don't stay anywhere near me so I can't try it out and they are only keen to send it up here (via my mate) if I am genuinely interested in buying it.

The only adapter that got near to the required quality was the original made by Canon. Third party adapters are available but IQ suffers to the point where you'd be better having a cheaper EF lens. Glassless adapters exist but, because of the different registration distance, you'll lose the ability to focus at infinity.

Cheers Bob:thumbs: Though a price was not specifically mentioned, I think it was gonna be in the low to mid hundreds as opposed to several thousand. Sounded like a good deal. I'd be primarily using it for bird photography, hence I am interested in the IQ. Would you suggest I give it a miss or is it worth a punt at the (speculated) price.

Infinity focus might not be that much of a problem in practise, as I'm guessing it will come close even with a simple adapter. I use a 100-400mm L for birds and never go anywhere near infinity (which is actually a heck of a long way off with long lenses). Anything further than a few metres is a spec in the viewfinder.

I would be more bothered about loss of AF, and maybe aperture control too, but if it's a good lens and the price is right, I'd go for it. Those inevitable pics of the moon might be a bit soft though ;)

If image quality is a concern then I would give it a miss. FD lenses are generally not worth the trouble (IMHO). If you want to get longer lenses on the cheap, and are not afraid to do MF then try Pentax or Olympus OM.
 
I believe (calculate) that you'll get 20.5m at infinity focus with the FD500L and 29.1m with the FD600L. Should be fine for brids but maybe out of range for larger wildlife (deer etc).
This is based on a glassless adapter which I think would be the best option.
