Favourite song lyrics

That reminds me of my favourite line from a cartoon.

A small hump moves rapidly across the desert sand, leaving a ridge behind it.

It stops and up from the sand pops Bugs Bunny.

"Meeh, shoulda took a left at Albuquerqe."

There are still so many Floyd lyrics to do. I nearly chose:

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves...

But I chose one from Who's Next instead.

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
<does air guitar....>

Dun, Danaa

Smoke on the water!

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence.

Simon and Garfunkel

The fool escaped from paradise will look over his shoulder and cry
Sit and chew on daffodils and struggle to answer why?
As you grow up and leave the playground
Where you kissed your prince and found your frog
Remember the jester that showed you tears, the script for tears

Marillion

Standing on a street in Belfast
A city of division widow in black
Standing on a street in Belfast
Crunching of the feet on the broken glass

Magnum

The last thing that I saw
As I lay there on the floor
Was "Jesus saves" painted by an atheist nutter
And a British rail poster read "have an away day, a cheap holiday
Do it today!"
I glanced back on my life
And thought about my wife
Cause they took the keys, and she'll think it's me
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight
The wine will be flat and the curry's gone cold
I'm down in the tube station at midnight
Don't want to go down in a tube station at midnight

The Jam

The Jam

Don't know so much of Jam's music but the other three are all favourites - especially the Marillion - definitely my favourite bit of a fab album!

Can you identify this one (without google!)

Maybe it was infatuation or the thrill of the chase
Maybe you were always beyond my reach and my heart was playing safe
But was that love in your eye I saw or the reflection of mine?
I'll never really know for sure, you never really gave me time

A lovely song by Gerry Rafferty
"Many years have gone since then
Seen us go our different ways
But now we sit here once again
Tonight we're gonna sing out, tonight our light will shine.

This is the time and place
To bring out our memories
It's written on every face
I can see it in you, you can see it in me."
Family Tree-Gerry Rafferty

"You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision, rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!"
Shine on You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd

I've seen all good people turn their heads each day
So satisfied, I'm on my way.
.. Yes.

Now we need something from Quadrophenia. Something moving. Any volunteers?

Cinderella Search _Fugazi
Give The Jam Best of a listen, superb

I saw a war widow in a laundrette,
Washing the memories from her husband's clothes.
She had medals pinned to a threadbare greatcoat
A lump in her throat with cemetary eyes.
I see convoys curbcrawling West German Autobahns
Trying to pick up a war.
They're going to even the score.
Oh... I can't take any more.
I see black flags on factories,
Soup ladies poised on the lips of the poor.
I see children with vacant stares,
destined for rape in the alleyways.
Does anybody care, I can't take any more!
Should we say goodbye?

And sometimes in the wee hours when the traffic dies down
She'll hear the sound of some bird on the wing
And she'll look out the window and she'll look at his picture
But not at the ring - not at the ring
She never looks at the ring

A bit of Tim Minchin:

I'm taking the stand in defense of the fence
I got a little band playing anthems to ambivalence
We divide the world into terrorists and heroes
Into normal folk and weirdos
Into good people and pedos
Into things that give you cancer and the things that cure cancer
And the things that don't cause cancer, but there's a chance they will cause cancer in the future
We divide the world to stop us feeling frightened
Into wrong and into right and
Into black and into white and
Into real men and fairies
Into status quo and scary
Yeah we want the world binary, binary
But it's not that simple.

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence.
Paul Certainly wrote some very insightful lyrics
I'm gonna match that with,

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armour,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Hotel hobbies padding dawns hollow corridors
I see that and I'll raise you:

You're just another coffin
in its way down the Emerald aisle
while the children's stony glance
mourn your death in a terrorists smile

The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts
on the supermarket shelves
Alley sings with shrapnel
detonate a temporary hell

Sadly this, like Grendel, had been dropped from the live set by the time I got to see them in concert (Wembley arena, circa 1987)

Do you rememebr, blocked up lines and call from Montreal?
Do you remember, your mother asked me never to call?
Do you remember talking in the bedroom making plans?
Do you remember you told me I should join a band?

and while looking for this as I *still* want to sing those lyrics and not the ones actually on Misplaced Childhood, I discovered that right at the bottom of the comments there's one from me four years ago about recording it from Radio 1 and playing it until the tape snapped! What I didn't write there was that when former step daughter (born in 1986) was first played this she said excitedly "There are two girls in my class called Kayleigh!" and didn't believe me when I told he they were named after the song :p

Button your lip. Don't let the shield slip.
Take a fresh grip on your bullet proof mask.
And if they try to break down your disguise with their questions
You can hide, hide, hide,
"I'll tell you what, I'll give you three blacks, and play you for five
..."
"Ta! You was unlucky there son"
"Time gentleman!"
Behind paranoid eyes.

You put on our brave face and slip over the road for a jar.
Fixing your grin as you casually lean on the bar,
Laughing too loud at the rest of the world
With the boys in the crowd
You hide, hide, hide,
Behind petrified eyes.

You believed in their stories of fame, fortune and glory.
Now you're lost in a haze of alcohol soft middle age
The pie in the sky turned out to be miles too high.
And you hide, hide, hide,
Behind brown and mild eyes.

I see that and I'll raise you:

You're just another coffin
in its way down the Emerald aisle
while the children's stony glance
mourn your death in a terrorists smile

The bomber's arm placing fiery gifts
on the supermarket shelves
Alley sings with shrapnel
detonate a temporary hell

Good stuff!

Just found myself singing Kayleigh out loud

"Gone Fishing"

I'm going fishing
I got me a line
Nothin' I do's gonna' make the difference
So I'm taking the time

And you ain't never gonna' be happy
Anyhow, anyway
So I'm going fishing
And I'm going today

I'm going fishing
Sounds crasy I know
I know nothing about fishing
But just watch me go

And when my time has come
I will look back and see
Peace on the shoreline
That could have been me

You can waste whole lifetime
Trying to be
What you think is expected of you
But you'll never be free

May as well go fishing

I could be anything, nothing, whatever oh well. Love is hell.

Love is Hell by Ryan Adams.

"Some nights I still sleep on the beach.
Remember when stars were in reach.
Then I wander in early to work,
Spend the day licking boots for my perks."
Bell Boy-The Who

Almost cut my hair,
It happened just the other day..

Brownie points to the first to work out who sung that !

All this Floyd, Zep etc we need a change of direction, so:

He said, "D'you want it pasteurized? 'Cause pasteurized is best,"
She says, "Ernie, I'll be happy if it comes up to my chest."

How about a bit of the Kinks - why a pop song was written on this subject I'll never know but it makes me smile.
Well I'm not the world's most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola la-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola

What do you want from life
To kidnap an heiress
or threaten her with a knife
What do you want from life
To get cable TV
and watch it every night

There you sit
a lump in your chair
Where do you sleep
and what do you wear
when you're sleeping

What do you want from life
An Indian guru
to show you the inner light
What do you want from life
a meaningless love affair
with a girl that you met tonight

How can you tell when you're doin' alright
Does your bank account swell
While you're dreaming at night
How do know when you're really in love
Do violins play when you're touching the one
That you're loving

What do you want from life
Someone to love
and somebody that you can trust
What do you want from life
To try and be happy
while you do the nasty things you must

Well, you can't have that, but if you're an American citizen you are entitled to:
a heated kidney shaped pool,
a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,
a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,
a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,
a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi,
real simulated Indian jewelry,
a Gucci shoetree,
a year's supply of antibiotics,
a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantooth
and Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,
a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,
Rosemary's baby,
a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,
a new Matador, a new mastodon,
a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,
a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,
a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,
a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,
a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,
a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,
or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?

A bit of Frozen ;-)
Don't know if I'm elated or gassy
But I'm somewhere in that zone
'Cause for the first time in forever
I won't be alone

"And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself
Well...How did I get here?"

Talking Heads, 'Once in a Lifetime'

Memory going a little now so lyrics may not be exact. Two which always are in the back of my brain.

Used to love a bit of Hip, Smiths, Stone Roses, Verve etc...................but always have been crap at remembering lyrics.

Derek B

She wiggled and giggled and pulled me to the ground and whispered in my ear easy Q get down, two big things like basketballs down below was like niagra falls..............

Smiths

Pump up the lifes complexity when the leather runs smooth on the passengers seat, I would go out tonight but I haven't got a stitch to wear........................

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.

Well if we are going all theatrical:

Meat Loaf

Then I'm down in the bottom of a pit in the blazing sun,
Torn and twisted at the foot of a burning bike,
And I think somebody somewhere must be tolling a bell.
And the last thing I see is my heart,
Still beating still beating
Breaking out of my body, and flying away
Like a bat out of

I got wrecked out here
In a Eldorado
I got wired, white-walled
This hot-wired sedan
I caught something weird in Encenada
I've a brother of sorts in Torquemada
Long distance information
Disconnect me if you can
On Detonation Boulevard.

I hear the roar of the big machine
Two worlds and in between
Love lost, fire at will
Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill, I hear
Dive bombers, and
Empire down
Empire down

Nine inch Nails / Hurt

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

Don't go too deep into the flood
Don't wade too long, you'll poison my love
Don't shut me out, don't hold it all in
Don't let my venom get under your skin

Oh you were just a roller coaster memory
I don't know why I was even passing through
I saw you making a date with Destiny
When he came around here asking after you
In the shadow of the Wheel of Fortune
You're busy trying to clear your name
You say 'I may be guilty yeah that may be true
But I'd be lying if I said I was to blame
See we could have been major contenders
We never got no money no breaks'
You've got a list of all the major offenders
You got a list of all their major mistakes
And he's just standing on the shadows
Yes and you smile that come-on smile
Oh I can still hear you say as clear as the day
'I'd like to make it worth your while'

Now, don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy

Three different artists this time, as it would be too easy for me to keep doing Richard Thompson or Marillion songs :p

It's another week 'til his cheque comes through
He's got a fiver left to spend on food.
The doors of the bar are open
and he breaks another rule

he sits on a stool that bears his name,
he's got a favourite glass that's called the same
He's never been kept waiting
'cause he pays the landlord's wage.

Mama said to me, "Child what's happened to your appetite?
I been cookin' all mornin' and you haven't touched single bite
That nice young preacher Brother Taylor dropped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billie Joe was throwin' somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

But the crown, it had fallen, and she thought she would break
And she stood there, ashamed of the way her heart ached
She took him to the doorstep and she asked him to wait
She would only be a moment inside.

Out in the distance her order was heard
And the soldier was killed, still waiting for her word
And while the queen went on strangeling in the solitude she preferred
The battle continued on

13 the Beast is Rising,
The Frenchman did surmise,
Through earthquakes and starvation,
The Warlord will arise,
Terror, Death, Destruction,
Pour from the Eastern sands,
But the truth of all predictions,
Is always in your hands.

Didn't realise how topical this was given lasts week's events - it just happened to be on the radio.
