Yes
I love my music and have a large collection of CD's - most of them either folky or heavy metal (depending on which end of the mood spectrum I am at the time!)

When I listen to songs there's often just a couple of lines that stand out and 'make' the song for me.

I could do hundreds of these, but will restrain myself to one for now!

"Mama tried to wash their faces but these kids have lost their graces, and daddy lost at the races too many times."

From Damien Rice - 'Older Chests'

Anyone else care to offer some favourite lyrics?

Phil

"Don't get smart or sarcastic
He snaps back just like elastic
Spare us the theatrics and the verbal gymnastics
We break wise guys just like matchsticks"

Elvis Costello, The Loved Ones,

"I don't know but I've been told, a big legged woman ain't got no soul"

Led Zep- Black Dog

"I saved you," cried that woman
"And you've bit me even, why?
You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die"
"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin
"You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in"

Al Wilson- The Snake :D

Two lovers kissing masks a scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude

That's Entertainment

He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

1952 Vincent Black Lightning :
( a really good cover version)

Stepping up boldy one put out his hand
He said, "I was just a child then now I'm only a man"

Your Possible Pasts - Pink Floyd

Beware the fisherman who's casting out his line
Into a dried up river bed,
But don't try to tell him 'cos he won't believe you.
Throw some bread to the ducks instead, it's easier that way.
I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.

Not sure what my favourites are but some that stand out would be the opening lines to Alkaline Trio's Radio, had a fit of giggles when I first heard it as it starts off as such a mellow little acoustic riff then...

"shaking like a dog s***ting razor blades, waking up next to nothing, after dreaming of you and me, waking up all alone, waking up so relieved..."

The entire song " Good f*****g Bye" as well, two of the best break up songs going!

Lets not forget the spoken Intro to Less than Jake's All my best friends are Metalheads...

"This is a fair request, and I promise not to judge and person only as a teenager, you will constantly remember some of my generation judges people by their race, beliefs, or the colour of their skin, and this is no more right than saying all teenagers are drunken dope addicts who are glue sniffers"

Religion and sex are powerplays
Manipulate the people for the money they pay
Selling skin, selling God
The numbers look the same on their credit cards

Some of my favourite lyrics are in a song written by a friend back in the ealy 1980s called Adam and Eve.

"And god said hey what a beautiful sight
my seven day wonder turned out alright
Adam and Eve were a sweet loving pair
until they found their god damned clothes."

Steve.

If one man
Had one home
In one world
He'd live alone without variety
Full of anxiety
No one to point at, question
Or even talk to -- in his private grave
No matter what color
He wouldn't be saved from hell
He dwells
A closed mind playing the part of prison cells

Everybody's got a hunger, a hunger they can't resist
There's so much that you want, you deserve much more than this
But if dreams came true, oh, wouldn't that be nice
But this ain't no dream we're living out through tonight
Girl, you want it, you take it, you pay the price

Springsteen- Prove it all night

Afghan Whigs - 'My Curse' "and there's blood on my teeth when I bite my song to speak, zip me down kiss me there I can smile now"

Sultans of Ping 'Where's Me Jumper' "It's all right to say things can only get better, If you haven't just lost your brand new sweater, Pure new wool and perfect stitches, Not the type of jumper that makes you itch, oh no"

10'000 Maniacs - 'Don't Talk' "I know that if you think of it Both long enough and hard, The drink you drown your troubles in Is the trouble you're in now"

Stepping up boldy one put out his hand
He said, "I was just a child then now I'm only a man"

Your Possible Pasts - Pink Floyd

Can't beat a bit of Floyd!

My favourite 'I held the blade in trembling hands, prepared to make it, but just then the phone rang - I never had the nerve to make the final cut'

And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No-one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun.

Floyd too right? Off Dark Side?

Springsteen has some great lines - the track 'Ghost of Tom Joad' is my favourite & also love Nebraska as an album.

Love love love 10,000 Maniacs - I performed Don't Talk live some years ago with a fellow teacher at a school rock concert!

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say

dark side of the moon pink floyd

Natalie Merchant (Motherland)

"Take one last look behind
Commit this to memory and mind
Don't miss this wasteland, this terrible place
When you leave
Keep your heart off your sleeve"

"When your world is full of strange arrangements
and gravity won't pull you through
you know you're missing out on something
well that something depends on you".

ABC 'The Look of Love'

This song is all about the lyrics:

"This morning at four fifty
I took her rather nifty
Down to an incubator
Where thirty minutes later
She gave birth to a daughter
Within a year a walker
She looked just like her mother
If there could be another"

Squeeze - 'Up the Junction'.

Hotel hobbies padding dawns hollow corridors
Bell boys checking out the hookers in the bar
Slug-like fingers trace the star-spangled clouds of cocaine on the mirror
The short straw took its bow
The tell tale tocking of the last cigarette
Marking time in the packet as the whisky sweat
Lies like discarded armour on an unmade bed
And a familiar craving is crawling in his head

looking back through time
You know it's clear that I've been blind
I've been a fool.
To open up my heart,
To all that jealousy, that bitterness, that ridicule.

Music was my first love
And it will be my last.
Music of the future
And music of the past.

To live without my music
Would be impossible to do.
In this world of troubles,
My music pulls me through.

Van Gogh did some eyeball pleasers
He must have been a pencil squeezer
He didn't do the Mona Lisa
That was an Italian geezer

There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever bas-tards

Einstein can't be classed as witless
He claimed atoms were the littlest
When you did a bit of splitting-em-ness
Frighten everybody s***less

ian dury and the blockheads.... there aint half been some clever bast...ds

Fab album by Marillion

My quote from it is
'And you listen with a tear in you eye
To their hopes and betrayals and your only reply
Is Slainte Mhath'

13 the Beast is Rising,
The Frenchman did surmise,
Through earthquakes and starvation,
The Warlord will arise,
Terror, Death, Destruction,
Pour from the Eastern sands,
But the truth of all predictions,
Is always in your hands.

So pray to music build a shrine
Worship in these desperate times
Fill your heart with every note
Cherish it and cast afloat
'Cause god is in these clef and tone
Salvation is found alone
Haunted by its melody
Music it will set you free
Let it set you free

...from one of my favourite bands...EVER! The mighty 'Machine Head'

Southampton Dock pink floyd

They disembarked in 45
And no-one spoke and no-one smiled
There were to many spaces in the line.
Gathered at the cenotaph
All agreed with the hand on heart
To sheath the sacrificial Knifes.
But now
She stands upon Southampton dock
With her handkerchief
And her summer frock clings
To her wet body in the rain.
In quiet desperation knuckles
White upon the slippery reins
She bravely waves the boys Goodbye again.

And still the dark stain spreads between
His shoulder blades.
A mute reminder of the poppy fields and graves.
And when the fight was over
We spent what they had made.
But in the bottom of our hearts
We felt the final cut.

think this is my favourite track everytime i hear it i just think how lucky i am..

There seems to be a bit of a theme running through this thread :D

For me its a toss up between........
(both by Pinky and the title in the last line for those that don't know)

When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb.

and

If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear stained eyes
Don't be surprised, when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice

10cc Won't feel the Benefit

You're like a cloud behind the sun
Like the face behind the clown
You're moving like the wrinkles in a frown
And you can never look back
A leaf that's borne upon the wind
A cardboard suitcase in your hand
The wanderer soon returns
And finds the colour of the grass is just the same
On the other side of the tracks, oh no

Genesis Time Table

A carved oak table,
Tells a tale
Of times when kings and queens sipped wine from goblets gold,
And the brave would lead their ladies from out of the room
to arbours cool.
A time of valour, and legends born
A time when honour meant much more to a man than life
And the days knew only strife to tell right from wrong
Through lance and sword.

Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl....

I remember that the first time round. Sung by......wait for it.....Duke of Earl.

It was on Juke Box Jury and was voted a miss!

As with most of Yes I have no real idea what they mean but there's something about these that just get me

Getting over overhanging trees
Let them rape the forest
Thoughts would send our fusion
Clearly to be home

Getting over wars we do not mean
Or so it seems so clearly
Sheltered with our passion
Clearly to be home

They move fast, they tell me,
But I just can't believe they really mean to

This has always stuck in my head:

"When the sun beats down and I lie on the bench,
I can always hear them talk.
Me, I'm just a lawnmower - you can tell me by the way I walk"

Genesis, 'I know what I like'.

Peter Gabriel for you, (or was it one of Brian Pern's? :sneaky:)
