Favourite Song Lines...

The voice can be the most important instrument in a piece of music, take O Fortuna for example, even though its probably the most played track world wide its a very emotional piece of music and vocal lead. Another example would be the flower duet from lakme.

Listen to the victim, abused by the system
The basis is racist, you know that we must face this
"It can't happen here". Oh yeah?
"Take a look around at the cities and the towns."

See them hunting, creeping, sneaking
Breeding fear and loathing with the lies they're speaking
The knife, the gun, broken bottle, petrol bomb
There is no future when the past soon come

And when they come to ethnically cleanse me
Will you speak out? Will you defend me?
Or laugh through a glass eye as they rape our lives
Trampled underfoot by the rights on the rise

Ich Bin Ein Auslander (X 4)

Welcome to a state where the politics of hate
Shout loud in the crowd "Watch them beat us all down."
There's a rising tide on the rivers of blood
But if the answer isn't violence, neither is your silence

If they come to ethnically cleanse me
Will you speak out? Will you defend me?
Freedom of expression doesn't make it alright
Trampled underfoot by the rise of the right.

Ich Bin Ein Auslander (X 8)

True, I don't think I made my point too well. I was talking more of modern pop and rock music not having the same ability to convey emotion and meaning. Choral music, and indeed the Carmina Burana in it's entirity, not just O Fortuna.

If you head away from the generic music into the more obscure stuff it's still there, but you don't see it in the mainstream so much - look at people like Delerium, Medieval Baebes and Shpongle for example....

Modern music in general is pretty pants compared to days gone by. There's some good stuff about but not in the same numbers as it used to be, shame really as there's a lot of talented people being pushed to one side in favour of disposable pop teens that make Mr Cowell a quick buck.

I take your point though, plenty of music only pieces certainly set a mood better than most vocal lead pieces. I think its probably because without a vocal they have to make the effort to get emotion across.

So true on all counts Lee! I enjoy my work, because we play a lot of the older stuff (albeit wind band arrangements) but we also get to see the work of John Williams, Sparke, and the like.

You may wish to include the influence of blues, gospel, country and folk music when you opine that "Modern music in general is pretty pants compared to days gone by". EG Seasick Steve, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, New Model Army, The Oysterband, PJ Harvey, Beth Orton, William Orbit, Banco De Gaia, Ozric Tentacles, and Astralasia.

Just as a thought.

Chris listen to this radio show, its called the every other monday show, because its on every other monday 9-11 and very eclectic, if your into music in a big way its worth listening too just to see how bonkers modern music can get. They are live now and you can listen through their site.

Way too many and so mood dependant--------------However John Lennons immortal "Oh Lookout"-The link between Polythene Pam and She came in through the bathroom window, still sends a tingle.

Directionless so plain to see
A loaded gun won't set you free

New dawn fades - Joy division

the postal service - brand new colony

I'll be the fire escape that's bolted to the ancient brick
Where you will sit and contemplate your day
I'll be the waterwings that save you if you start drowning
In an open tab when your judgement's on the brink
I'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite
Albums back as your lying there drifting off to sleep...
I'll be the platform shoes and undo what heredity's done to you...
You won't have to strain to look into my eyes
I'll be your winter coat buttoned and zippedstraight to the throat
With the collar up so you won't catch a cold

Peter Gabriel 'Kiss that frog'

Sweet little princess
Let me introduce his frogness
You alone can get him singing
He's all puffed up, wanna be your king
Oh you can do it
C'mon Lady kiss that frog

More Pink Floyd, this time taken up as the SETI theme song. :)

Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?
Is there anybody out there?

Finally, the all time best single line from Whitney Houston

'I will always love hugh' ahem...

These three spring to mind, all for very different reasons...

"But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die" - Johnny Cash, Folsom Prison Blues

"Should I grass on him, report him to the cardinal.
Or whether I should egg him on to turn professional" - Mansun, Stripper Vicar

"When I was younger
the smell of the hunger
in all of the music you made.
Kept me believing
you lived for the lifestyle,
not just the cash to be made" - The Wildhearts, Turning American

And if London burns I'll be standing on the beach with my guitar

woooo radiohead :P

got a few placebo ones that are cool too

Ha, that's interesting - I'd never really given that any thought before. As a sidenote, on the Anthology set She Came in Through The Bathroom Window is sung in a slightly different tune - and is much nicer in my opinion.

But on topic "She's the kind of a girl that makes the News of the World, Yes you could say she was attractively built" is a pretty cool line.

I love songs that tell a story - the one that springs to mind is Decoration Day by the Drive By Truckers:

It’s Decoration Day.
And I’ve a mind to roll a stone on his grave.
But what would he say.
“Keeping me down, boy, won’t keep me away”.

It’s Decoration Day.
And I knew the Hill Boys would put us away,
but my Daddy wasn’t afraid.
He said “We’ll fight till the last Lawson’s last living day”

I never knew how it all got started
a problem with Holland before we were born
and I don’t know the name of that boy we tied down
and beat till he just couldn’t walk anymore.
But I know the caliber in Daddy’s chest
and I know what Holland Hill drives.
The state let him go, but I guess it was best
cause nobody needs all us Lawsons alive.

Daddy said one of the boys had come by
the Lumber Man’s favorite son.
He said, “Beat him real good but don’t dare let him die
and if you see Holland Hill run.
Now I said, “they ain’t give us trouble no more
that we ain’t brought down on ourselves”
But a chain on my back and my ear to the floor
and I’ll send all the Hill Boys to hell.

It’s Decoration Day
and I’ve got a family in Mobile Bay
and they’ve never seen my Daddy’s grave.
But that don’t bother me, it ain’t marked anyway.
Cause I got dead brothers in Lauderdale south
and I got dead brothers in east Tennessee.
My Daddy got shot right in front of his house
he had noone to fall on but me.

It’s Decoration Day
and I’ve got a mind to go spit on his grave.
If I was a Hill, I’d have put him away
and I’d fight till the last Lawson’s last living day.

At this very moment, having just perused Warehouse Express ... this one comes to mind...

"If I hadnt seen such riches, I could live with being poor"
Sit Down, by James. :'(

Agree - love that line :)

and

Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Changes:

"While American business men snap up Van Goghs for the price of a hospital wing"

Harvey Andrews - Requiem:

"And now you come knocking on my door
To tell me its Jesus who saves
But for two thousand years hes brought nothing but tears
And the crosses to plant on the graves"

I love this whole song. I havnt a clue.. But the song makes it sound better :D

Over the flows

"Over the flows
I take my time
I search and turn around
Watching the stars
I want to dive in the sky
Deep inside of me

Over the sky
I found a place I can be
No need to run
Follow my heart
I understand why and when
And what it's all about

Watching the signs
Dancing all around
Over the flows
I find now a way
Speak the words
Already know
And now I learn
Open the door"

And I love this verse...

"Are we left all alone?
Mother has no time but she cares for me
and she cried all the tears
I am joining now the river flow
I am three days old
Now the time has come
You have to be man
I don't want to destroy
the only chance I have
to survive down here
The wind blows I'm so scared
and the waves so big, I'm not prepared
I will have to be strong
but for now I cry all the tears"

not subtle, and gets some very odd looks when ya phone rings outside a church before a wedding. oops.

Great stuff. Also

And there's more important things in life than TV
And while all of England's staring at the screen
'Cos there's never been chameleons that change things
So don't regret a single thing you mean

Mansun - Until the next life.

A vastly underrated band IMHO.

Gotta throw a PF one in too.

"The paper holds their folded faces to the floor,
And every day the paperboy brings more"

Cold blue swastika tattooed on my skin
The ice in my veins the staples in my chin
I've got it carved in my forehead "Slave To My Sin"
Too violent for the brotherhood to ever take me in

Gonna write down my law in blood upon the street
To the cadence of a goose-step heavy metal beat
Wanna purify my race gonna turn up the heat
Just wanna make 'em die and make the job complete

I am a vicious young man oh I am a wicked young man
It's not the games that I play the movies I see the music I dig
I'm just a wicked young man

I like to run my body on heavy heavy fuel
I can punch through a wall I can kick like a mule
I got a pocketful of bullets and a blueprint of the school
I'm the devil's little soldier I'm the devil's little tool

I am a vicious young man oh I am a wicked young man
It's not the games that I play the movies I see the music I dig
I'm just a wicked young man

I got every kind of chemical pumpin' through my head
I read Mein Kampf daily just to keep my hatred fed
I never ever sleep I just lay in my bed
Dreamin' of the day when everyone is dead

I am a vicious young man oh I am a wicked young man
It's not the games that I play the movies I see the music I dig
I'm just a wicked young man
I am a vicious young man oh I am a vicious young man
I am a vicious young man oh I am a wicked young man

Lipstick traces on an unmade bed
We drank all night and got devils in our head
She said some things that should have stayed unsaid
Emotions overflowing
Now I don't know what to believe
Sitting here in the cold light of the day
She felt anger, I felt pain
I walked out into the pouring rain
Packed my bags and took the midnight train
Didn't care where it was going
On my way, running like a thief
Hard to leave, but harder to stay

There's no wrong, there's no right
But sometimes she breaks all the rules
And lying here alone tonight
Can't believe love can be so cruel

Wish I'd believed her
'Cos now I need her
Sometimes the truth just hurts too much
She goes straight to the heart
With a truth that always finds me
She goes straight to the heart
And pulls tight the ties that bind me
She can be so cold, and it tears me apart
When she twists the knife
It goes straight to the heart

Sometimes love is an endless fight
It's never simple, never black and white
Just like ships passing in the night
Who knows where they're going
No forgiveness, no reprieve
Both sailing their separate ways
Light of day, dead of night
I'm searching for what I can't find
Try and try as I might
I can't get her out of my mind
Wish I'd believed her
'Cos now I need her
I guess we all must love and learn
She goes straight to heart
With a truth that always finds me
She goes straight to the heart
And pulls tight the ties that bind me
She can be cold, and it tears me apart
When she twists the knife
It goes straight to the heart

From `Moment of truth by ELO 2`

Reached back for the bottle
And rubbed against the lamp
Genie came out smiling
Like some Eastern tramp
He said, hey boy what's happening
What is going on
You can have three wishes
If you don't take too long
If you don't take too long

I said well
I wish they were all happy in the Lebanon
Wish somebody'd help me write this song
And I wish when I was young
My old man had not been gone
Genie said consider it done

There's something in the air
And you don't know what it is
You see someone through the window
Who you've just learned to miss
And the road leads on to glory but
You used up your last wish
Your last wish
And you want her to come home
Bring her home

Genie said I'm sorry
That's the way it goes
Where the hell's the lamp sucker
It's time for me to go
Bye

There's something in the air
And you don't know what it is
You see someone through the window
Who you've just learned to miss
And the road leads on to glory
But you used up your last wish
Your last wish
And you want her to come home

Three wishes from Amused to death by Roger waters.

Well, how come you only want tomorrow
With its promise of something hard to do
A real life adventure worth more than pieces of gold
Blue skies above and sun on your arms strength your stride
And hope in those squeaky clean eyes
You'll get chilly receptions everywhere you go
Blinded with desire - I guess the season is on

So you train by shadow boxing, search for the truth
But it's all, but it's all used up
Break open your million dollar weapon
And push your luck, still you push, still you push your
luck
A broken nosed mogul are you
One of the new wave boys

Same old thing in brand new drag
Comes sweeping into view, oh ho ho ho ho ho
As ugly as a teenage millionaire
Pretending it's a whizz kid world
You'll take me aside, and say
"Well, David, what shall I do?
They wait for me in the hallway"
I'll say "Don't ask me, I don't know any hallways"
But they move in numbers and they've got me in a corner
I feel like a group of one, no-no
They can't do this to me
I'm not some piece of teenage wildlife

Those midwives to history put on their bloody robes
The word is that the hunted one is out there on his own
And you're alone for maybe the last time
And you breathe for a long time
Then you howl like a wolf in a trap
And you daren't look behind

You fall to the ground like a leaf from the tree
And look up one time at that vast blue sky
Scream out aloud as they shoot you down
No no, I'm not a piece of teenage wildlife
I'm not a piece of teenage wildlife

And no one will have seen and no one will confess
The fingerprints will prove that you coudn't pass the test
There'll be others on the line filing past, who'll whisper low
I miss you he really had to go
Well each to his own, he was
Another piece of teenage wildlife, oh oh oh oh oh
Another piece of teenage wildlife, oh oh oh oh oh
Another piece of teenage wild...
Wild
Wild
Wild

Teenage wildlife from Scary monsters by david bowie

For restless eyes egos burn
And the mould is hard to break
Now we've waded in too deep
And love is overboard
Heavy hearts token words
All the hopes I ever had
Fade like footprints in the sand

Level 42 - Lessons in Love

I'd see you as a child
Playing by the sea
Just like the stories you've told
From memory.
I watch the course of your life
Like watching the beads fall
From broken thread.

Horse - God's Home Movie

If I could break down these walls
And shout my name at heaven's gate
I'd take these hands
And I'd destroy the dark machineries of fate,
The vehicles are broken
Heaven's the one above
Hellfire's a promise away
I'd still be saying
I'm still in love

Ordinary World

Written by Duran Duran

Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly

I turned on the lights, the TV and the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you

What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops, run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away

But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Here today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk

And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive

Every one is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one is my world, I will learn to survive
Any one is my world
Every one is my world

For me it has to be

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine
