I normally use Capture NX2 for my editing, this has a heal tool which is not great for large objects, and it does not have a clone tool. At the moment I use Paint.net for any cloning I have to do.
I understand that Elements 9 has a Content Aware Fill tool as part of its heal tool and I am thinking of buying it to give me a few more options.
Before I buy it could someone have a go at removing the drainpipe from the attached 100% crop please, using Elements 9 Content Aware Fill and let me know how easy it was. I can then decide how much better it is than Paint.net
Many thanks
Kev

Very quick bodge attempt (less than 30s total).

I used a simple content aware brush for 99% then lassoed near the parasol to avoid "bleed"

Many thanks for that Brian, it looks good to me.
With Paint.net I get a very patchy result, it is probably due to my editing skills but it looks as though Elements 9 may be the way to go.

I would not have thought the photo was a good example of content aware fill, as any package would be able to clone the drainpipe out.

You would need to see it used on a more complex image to see if it's worth buying Elements 9 JUST for Content aware fill.

I just used the normal clone tool in Elements 8

Here you go, content aware fill (CS5 but should be the same) quick rough lasso then CA fill, took about 10 seconds.

Very similar result to Brian without the need for the lasso step - took me longer to type this reply!

They are probably using near enough the same source material, I just used the fill because thats what the op asked for, if I was "fixing" my own pic I'd probaly use the brush as well, or just copy and paste a patch over it.

Many thanks Mark & Wayne.
I agree that it is not the hardest thing to clone or patch out but I did not want to ask for anything too difficult in case I put people off.
To be honest I can clone most of the drainpipe out reasonably well but I have trouble around the parasol and I make a right mess when I try to clone out the drain hopper on the left due to the different colours of the wall.
I was hoping that the content aware fill tool would make things easier and quicker. Maybe I should just practise my cloning skills.
Once again thanks for your efforts.

Sorry if I confused anyone Wayne. I meant I had done it in PSE9 in that short time

I used it in CS5 on a landscape which had farm buildings and a main road running through it, I took out the buildings and the road very successfully, what it does is you highlight the item you don't want and it replaces it with whatever's immediately around it. Sometimes it works much better than others. If I can find the two pics I worked on I will post them up for you.

No worries mate, I guessed that what you meant.

OP
For the most part CAF does a fair job, it is "fooled" someimes and I have had it put somthing obviously wrong (trees in sky for example)
I have found it's best to leave a bit of an overlap around the subject to be removed as it seems to help it figure out what to put in over it.

Thanks Wayne, something to put on my list to Santa I think. :)
