Hi,

I ahve a faulty 17-85 IS lens.. It will only take a picture if its wide open, anything else gives me error 99 on my 400D and error 01 on my 50D

Pressing the DoF preview button doesn't change the apeture to the set value..

So - I have heard that Canon Elstree does a good service..

What are their contact details?

Thanks
Paul

perfect, just what I am looking for..

hope it's not bad... guess if its gonna be lots, then its not worth repairing

Here you go Paul.

Canon UK Ltd - SERVICE CENTRE
Service Centre
Unit 130, Centennial Park
Elstree
WD6 3SE Herts.
tel.: +44 208 731 4134 fax.: +44 845 1203613

Now I live in Dubai and have never used a Canon service centre so I looked up the contact details on the internet.

Couldn't you have done the same?! :shake:

Hi,

I had exaclty that problem with my 300D and sent the body off for a service and repair - £150 later, the problem was indeed with the lens, not the body. My mistake for not doing enough research. My lens is the non IS one, though and I have been advised that it isn't worth repairing.

Canon at Elstree gave great service, took less than a week.

Good luck!

I have a different problem with my 17-85mm, and spoke to Park Cameras last week, they told me Canon (who they would have sent it to) would charge a minimum of £156 to work on that particular lens.

Hope that info helps.

hmm,, thats not sounding too promosing then.. I have just had a look online and I can get a good second hand one for not much more than that...

just phoned them up and they have said the repair should be £52!

Not to bad - will send if off tomorrow and see what happens! :)

It will be interesting to compare notes, Paul. We've just sent one of our 70-200s off to Canon with exactly the same symptoms - ERR 99 at all apertures other than wide open. I bet it costs us more than £52 though.

Well, my lens has just arrived back... can't test it as I don't have my camera here but the paperwork says the aperture unit has been replaces and the lens cleaned and tested.

had a play with it last night.. all good perfect working order!

Great service from Canon Elstree - thanks! :D

Hi Paul, I appear to have developed the exact same fault as you, and I was wondering what Canon Elstree charged you in the end for the repair? I know you said that they quoted £52, is that what you ended up paying?

Cheers,
Julian

Julian

I got charged £52 as quoted and my lens has been perfect ever since!

Great service

Great Paul, thanks for getting back to me so quickly - looks like I'll be calling Canon on Wednesday after the Bank Holiday!

Just posting for any other users with the aperture issue that it's still only £52 all inclusive for the lens repair and I got mine back today, after it reached them on Monday - superb service!
