Faulty lens, or has it died?

In the middle of doing some indoor macro today i suddenly got a message saying
Err 01
Communication between the camera and the lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts.

I took the lens off the contacts look clean, I tried another lens and that worked as it should, put the macro lens back on and I can hear a motor noise as though its trying to focus but it sounds louder than normal. Switch the camera on and I get the same noise from the lens!

Has my lens died?

Possibly a.f motor failure .. but is it worth a repair . Take into account manual focus is preferable in macro ?

Thank you, i only ever use manual focus with it but its not conecting to the camera so i cant use it at all.

It does not sound very healthy, it is going to be a toss up between have it repaired, sell it for spares or repair and the cost of a replacement all depends on the maths.

Worth doing if you haven't sometimes it works ...
