I've had my Canon 400D for nearly a year now and it now has a fault!

When I press the button to pop-up the built in flash, it rarely pops-up! I've been using a flash on the hotshoe, and I think the microswitches under the hotshoe are sticking, so the camera thinks the flash unit is still fitted.

Its still under the 12 month warranty so will take it back to Jessops (I know they are bad, but the mrs bought it as a present ) and get it in for repair. Would be great if I could manage a full refund though and get a 40d instead :D

Has anyone else had similar problems?

[idiot filter]
you know it only pops up when powered on
I had a camera where it was mechanical, so worked even if the camera was off
400D needs to be on before the flashgun will pop

I've had it nearly a year now, and have gone past the 'NO CF CARD' or lens cap left on type problems (well most of the time anyway

Can't say I've heard of that problem before, although we did have member recently having trouble with the pop up flash on a 350D. In that case though, it was popping up - just not firing.

Have you tried using it on full Auto in a darkish room where it should pop up without needing to touch the button?

Also, I'd just try pressing the button and see if you can then raise the flash manually, as it could possibly be just a spring problem.

Good luck anyway, but at least you're still under warranty. :)

I've tried the dark room, also tried pulling up the flash, it still won't fire. If I put on and remove my flash unit on/off the hotshoe, then sometimes it will work ok...for a while
Leading me to think its the microswitch under the hotshoe :(

Sounds like it, or maybe just a dodgy bit of soldering. I have a camera repair guy who unfortunately has had to pack in dealing with digital cameras, they're getting just too complex, but when he was doing them, he was telling me that usually these faults are just down to isolating which circuit board is the problem and replacing it.

I had the same problem with mine when I used it a couple of months ago. I was going to send it away for warranty repair but decided not to.
Anyway, I hadn't used the camera much in last couple of weeks so I charged the battery ready for this weekend. Now the flash pops up every time as if nothing was every wrong

Give your battery a good charge and try it.
