Afternoon all,

looking for a take everywhere camera - my most important requirement is focussing speed. Are there any mirrorless cameras or compacts with dslr like continuous focus tracking.

My current camera is an em1, and was wondering if there is anything better and smaller than that.

Fuji XT2 i can think of. Probably some more but I'm not too sure.

The EM1 mark 2 has much better continuous autofocus and tracking than the original EM1. The Sony a6300 and a6500 are supposed to be good too and are smaller cameras but the lenses can be bigger.

There are loads of video reviews about these cameras on YouTube.

Sony A6300 or A6500.

BUT - it does depend on what you class as "dslr like continuous focus tracking".

Do you mean an entry level DSLR (yes, mirrorless can match or better it), or top end Sports (nope, mirrorless can't match the best that a DSLR can offer)?

It also depends on the lens and light level (again, a decent DSLR will tend to outperform mirrorless as the light levels drop).

I guess it would be good to tell us what you intend to shoot with the mirrorless?

I don't know about focus tracking as I never use it but if it helps at all... the latest CSC's I've had (Panasonic GX7, G7 and GX80) are so fast at acquiring focus that what I do now is position the focus point / or frame the shot and press the shutter button. I don't wait for focus to be acquired any more as by the time my brain has sent the push signal to my finger and my finger has reacted the camera has acquired focus.

I think when it comes to tracking on MC mode, is a different story. It really depend what the OP is trying to shoot on a CSC system.

The dslrs that i have experience of and the benchmark I compare against are the d300s and d7100. While the em1 is fast at acquiring focus, it much more frequently focusses on the wrong object (often the background when there is an obvious subject in the foreground) and also does not not keep the subject in focus in a sequence of shots nearly as well as the above nikons.

I still love the camera, but wish it would be better at tracking my 2 year old son...!

PS i should restate the question in my initial post to be "which compact has the best focus tracking". I am not really interested in changing formats for Fuji or Sony at the moment. The size advantage for M43 is too compelling, and i find the quality of the output sufficient (a3 being the biggest prints i have made).

EDIT
and the em1 mk2 is not in consideration. This is a hobby of mine, and have recently picked up an em1 (with <300 actuations) for a quarter the price em1 mk2's are going for - i cannot justify spending 4x the money for the newer model....

A6000 is very quick or the A6300 or A6500 but a fair price increase. But as said the higher level dslr cameras are better in low light.

The A6000 has decent tracking and also an automatical eye focus feature which is brilliant as you can use whatever focusing method (multi point, sector, centre etc) which suits for regular stuff using the shutter button but have the AE button set for eye focus so if you are shooting a person or animal it will automatically find the eye without you having to recompose or adjust the focus point.

It's very accurate which is a God send when using fast lenses, even the 1.4.

You appear to have set your own answer, the only m43 currently faster at caf than the em1 is the em1 mkii and you do not want to spend that money or change from m43, so if your question really is what is faster at caf than an em1 but rule out the mkii......no answer afaik.
