Hello all -

Looking for some help and guidance.

I presently have a Nikon D40 with kit lens - which is great, but it has one limitation for me.

I shoot a lot of long exposure shots at night and the processing time is becoming an issue for me.

If I shoot a 30 second long exposure shot then it takes pretty much the same time again before I can take another picture.

What I need is a camera which will do this quicker.

I have had other cameras in the past where this was done a lot quicker - D7000 etc but sold these on for one reason or another.

I am wondering whether a D200 or D300 will give me the quicker processing time I am looking for - or possibly a 40d Canon - I have no real opinion on brand, they are both more than good enough for my level of ability.

Appreciate and help.

:)

One thing this could be, is the speed of your memory card. What memory card do you have, and does it tell you the speed on the front? 30mbs, 60mbs etc etc. Also, does the D40 have a long exposure NR function? If it does, and it is switched on, it would do exactly as you have described. 30 second exposure, then a further 30 second exposure for NR.

This is most likely long exposure noise reduction.

It works the same on all cameras, basically a dark frame is taken after the exposure, and used to map/remove the noise from the long exposure.

Find the function in your manual, and turn it off. That will reduce processing time greatly and was probably off for the other cameras you tried.

Switch of long exposure noise reduction, shoot RAW, and if you need NR do it post process in Lightroom. Your D40 will work perfectly then with no delay.

Thanks very much - will look into this now :)

Excellent - found the NR setting, which was turned on

First shot with this on was the usual and then with it off there was no delay at all - perfect!

Thanks to all above for the help and guidance , I can get back to learning about taking pictures now - this camera is more than good enough for me - maybe a 50mm prime would be a good purchase but will wait and see; thanks again :)
