Have you got the windows remote desktop service running on the client computer?

have you tried LogMeIn? The free edition should be fine for you :)

Ahh sossa - yup did mean Routing and Remote Access - always thought you needed that on to be able to RDC....

With VNC if you lower the colour level under 'Colour & Encoding' it should speed things up....

I just checked - looks like it has to go over the internet to work

It will go out to the web to get onto the pc, this is part of its magic so it can bypass NAT and other complications, then I believe it will go peer to peer, so in your case it "should" run locally. IT does not funnel everything through their servers, this would be slow and costly for them.

it really is fast *** even from home to the office, I would also highly recomend it, you can try then unplug the adsl lead (or cable modem lead) to prove or disprove if it runs peer to peer after the initial connection?

VNC shouldnt be that slow over a LAN, we use it for desktop support at work and while granted there is a slight lag when sending large changes in screen content but mostly its alright for remote admin.

whats up with RDC?

what are you using the remote connection for?

I use it internally with tight vnc when I cba to go downstairs or so my sis can spy on her daughter on comp

should be alright for "spying", i do it all the time to the stores over a 8mb ADSL based VPN. granted its not fast in that instance but you can clearly see what theyre up to. unless its a video in which case you just get a black box.

It's cattle trucked. As I mentioned in the OP

...You're not serious are you? Read my OP!

i read it but its lacking info..

what is wrong with RDC? does it connect at all, does it connect and then not work as expected?

edit - i see further down the thread a "a protocol error" is mentioned, whats the error?

what are you doing on the remote computers, are you just doing normal admin type tasks or are you trying to use it like a normal desktop and trying to view websites etc.

blimey, the lack of info was nearly as bad as some of the logs we get into the Helpdesk..

Them - "The computer is not working properly"
Us - "Right so what's it doing?"
Them - "It's not working"

have you changed the settings for vnc so it knows its running on a LAN? RDP doesn't work on windows xp home edition (and some vista editions)

I'm acknowledging your reply but I can't be bothered providing the information; I'm really not in the mood at the moment man. I'll fix it myself.

as for VNC, it should be fine for most basic tasks over a LAN (im not talking wireless) and at a push an ADSL based WAN (or our laggy as "flip" LES100). but like i say it will lag for tasks that require large amount of screen updates. especially on higher resolutions.

ive just read something that says sometimes the protocol error is born from a slow connection. may tie in with the lagging VNC you are seeing maybe?

try connecting both machines via CAT5 as a test?

I could help you too, but hey I can't be arsed :exit:
