fast prime equivalent to 50mm on film

anyone has any ideas? want to know which yield the best IQ

Sigma 30mm 1.4 HSM
Sigma 20mm 1.8
Nikon 20 2.8
Nikon 24 2.8
Nikon 28 1.4 (i think this is probably the best but impossible to find and ones on ebay is like £2000 :'()
Nikon 28 2.8
Nikon 35 2

I don't really care for HSM AFs etc. just want decent and accurate AF

before anyone asks, i have the 50 1.8, Field is a bit narrow, difficult in crowded locations for portraits. Had to knock over a few pints to get a photo of a mate the other day, not the most popular guy in the pub needless to say :)
 
Assuming your camera is a Nikon 1.5 crop sensor - a 35mm lens will give you the equivalent of a 52mm lens on a full frame camera.

My 50mm is one my favourite lenses but it's a a real pain the FOV you lose on a crop sensor, so I understand where you're coming from.

The Nikon guys will advise on sharpest options I'm sure.

i have the 35mm f/2 and its lovely i cant see you going wrong there as its not wickedly expensive

dave, that is a damn good 100% crop dave.

the Afs is like ridiculous expensive isn't it? also is the AFS an upgrade of the lens or they just put in a motor ?
 
i just bought a cheapish 28 from ebay for similar reason (but wanted marginally wider than a 35) fingers crossed ill not be knockin pints over
 
I have been going through this very dilemma and have plumped for the Sigma 30mm f1.4.
Hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow.

is this the 28 f1.4? :O the only ones i can find are £2k. the 2.8 vignetts a lot even on the cropped sensor

and also very tempted by the 30mm HSM but its a DX lens which would have issues if i decide to go full frame etc
 
From your list, and seeing you want this on a DX body, I would say go with the Sigma 30/1.4

I have the Sigma 20/1.8, Nikon 35/2 and Nikon 50/1.8 ... love them for what they individually offer. However, the 20/1.8, though fast with wonderful image and colour rendition, is a bit too wide on an FX (may be fine on a DX). The thing is, I managed to pick that from Jessops (new) for just under £190.

For the price the 20/1.8 are offered now, compared to the 30/1.4 HSM, I'd say go tiwht the 30/1.4 .. cheaper, slightly faster and wonderfully compact. The 20/1.8 is huge and uses expensive 82mm filters, while the 30/1.4 is smallish and uses 62mm filters (that's a whole 2cm difference in diameter, which is a huge difference).
 
hehe, all my lens at the moment are 82mm anyways :( so in terms of filter it would be nice to keep them the same. but 20mm is a bit wide for me i think
 
The Sigma 30mm is incredibly sharp, even wide open. Unable to comment on any of the others though as I've never used them.
 
so far there is 35mm f2; 35mm f1.8 and the 30mm f1.4...

I think i will wait a bit for the 35 f1.8 come out and see the reviews...thanks guys.
 
ive had the 28 and 35 nikons

to be honest there isnt too much between the two sharpness wise - they're as sharp as any nikon primes (ie very!). im more fond of the 42mm focal length (i once got to play with a pentax(?) 43mm prime about 8 or 9 years ago and really liked the focal length) rather than 52mm so the 28 wins it for me, personally.

the 28mm 1.4 is definetely not worth it now a days, it wasnt too badly priced new but the second hand prices are extortionate! unless you really really need the 1.4 then theres probably not that much difference. the f2.8 is very very sharp.
 
I am going to go to a camera shop and try them out :) and take pictures of the shop assitant see how close or far i have to be. I think that has to be the best way to determine the focal length as there probably isn;t much to chose from in terms of IQ between the 28 2.8 30 1.4 and 35 2
 
the 28 is a cheap e series, cheap as in 55 quid-as said some of the 24s and 28s go for silly money, once ive tried the 28 ill decide whether to go for nikon 50 af-s or sigma 30 hsm

Ricky if you already have 50mm, you may be better trying the Nikkor 24mm f2.8. The 35mm f2 Nikkor is a great lens, but is not that much of a difference to your 50mm, with regard to angle of view.

I like 24mm on a crop sensor, about the same as 35mm on a film body, which was always a nice angle of view.
 
i can seem to focus properly, either my eyes are really poor, or my viewfinder doesn't have any magnification. so i think i need AF lenses, *** i have been seeing these E lenses and the review on them is amazing

I am looking for one too, its out of stock in jessops, where did you get yours from ?

I had a nightmare last month trying to get one of these from Jessops. I reserved it online for pickup for Leamington Spa, the morning I was on my way to pick it up they phoned to say it was a mistake on the system and they didn't have it, they did have one at a different location and would get it sent across. then they phoned a few days later to say that that was also a mistake on the system and that one was canon fit. They then offered to order one in. All this time the price seems to be creeping up on other sites.

In the end I managed to get it from Onestop Digital for about £270. Which looking around now seems a pretty good price. There not in the UK though.
 
I got the Sigma 30 1.4 about a month ago and love it, although with the nikkor 35 1.8 af's coming out which is slightly cheaper, half the weight and smaller it depends what your priorities are.
