You would definitely notice the difference between the Nikon 300mm f4 performance and the 70-300mm. The 70-300mm is ok in good light, but its performance would significantly fall off as the light conditions degraded, so don't give up on the 300mm f4, you could always hire 1 for the day if you wanted to try before you buy, it's not too expensive, have a look at http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/

I guess it is really up to me to decide whether my next purchase will be aimed at wildlife or sport/all round.
