With little correction - the Redsnapper TB-12 head and some others do allow horisontal turning (panning) whilst the ball is locked (the base of the ballhead has an extra lock that allows this movement).

In addition to that you can (with the ball tension control) make the camera and ball lock but still moveable (with adjustable tension from solidly locked to easily movable). This effectively allows you to quickly move the the camera in any direction without having tofiddle with locks all the time.
 
Just ordered the Redsnapper TRI-283 Alloy legs and a TB-12 Ball Head.
 
i prefer it to the manfrotto one i had on loan from my mate, it just seems much smoother and not as bulky and clunky as the manfrotto one.

The QR is a bit different to the QR on the manfrotto and it works using 2 dials - one clips the head the other tightens it, so if you have it really tight you need to loosen it a bit before you do the clip one, but when in portrait i feel more secure knowing that it is tight.

certainly a good product for the money.

i'm planning on looking to see how it is with a Cambo SC-2 (LF camera) this week and will post some pics etc when i do.

I just got mine today, had to look high and low for the shorter centre column too! For the money I'm very impressed with it, good bit of kit. My friend has a Manfrotto 055XPROB so I'm looking forward to comparing to two considering he paid £210 for the legs, pan & tilt head & bag, I paid £75 for the same Redsnapper setup!!
 
Just for anyone wondering just how good and secure the redsnapper Tri-283 and 3 way head are here's an interesting one for you.

we use a very sturdy manfrotto tripod and ball head at college normally for the LF cameras but the ball heads have been taking a bit of abuse and were moving all over the place and the tripods have seen better days...so... i decided to try and see how my Redsnapper set-up coped.

The pic below is my tri-283 and 3 way head with a Cambo SC-2 Basic Large format 5x4 camera on it complete with 210mm lens.

my DLSR weighs nothign in comparision to this lot as the monorail is quite meaty.

It was 100% solid and secure and i'd have no issues working with it on a more regular basis, in fact it's going for a field trip this weekend...

So for anyone wondering how sturdy this set-up is and whether it will cope with your kit then no need to worry :)
 
Just one thing before I order, is it possible to switch to a ballhead in the future without replacing the tripod. I'm pretty sure the 3way head is the one that'll suit me best, but if I choose to get a ballhead I can take off the 3way head and put it on right?

/end dumb question.
 
I think it's just a standard tripod mount at the top that will take any head, somebody here uses the Redsnapper legs with a Manfrotto head :thinking:
 
I'm going to order a Snapper tonight, but i need a little help deciding on the head.

I only want this to shoot landscapes and long exposure work. I have been using a pan/tilt but like the idea of the ball head it just seems more versatile.
What are the pros / cons of either type of head or does it just come down to personal preference?

It's probably personal preference...I've just used my new Redsnapper + pan/tilt haed for the 1st time, excellent piece of kit...I quite like been able to lock-off 1/2 axis & adjust the other, didn't get on with a ball-head when I bought one a while ago

You think correct
I have redsnapper legs with a Kirk BH-1 ballhead on top. Standard screw
If you have more than one head you like to use then you can order spare column assemblies from Joe too.
 
What a great bit of kit.
The ball head is a dream.
 
Only just found the shorter centre pole in the bag due to this thread--cheers it will help me out today shooting goldeneye and goosander at their level.

With ref. to the bag-i have the Giottos series 2 ball head and it fits in nice and snug into the bag.I havent used the tripod much at all but have decided to make the effort now that i have the shorter ploe on it. Cheers.
