Hi everyone, never really heard of Redsnapper tripods before browsing these forums. Just wondered are they really a worthy alternative to Manfrotto as some people are suggesting?

I'm looking at a 055XPROB with a 804rc2 head, would the redsnapper be anywhere near as good considering its nearly half the price?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm defo thinking about it Wayno, did a bag/carrying strap come with it, if so what was that like?

Anyone used both the Manfrotto 190 or 055XPROB and the Redsnapper?

I concur with Wayno. I got the tripod and 3 way head for xmas. Superb bit of kit. Solid and firm. The bag is padded and comes with a very nice strap on it.

If you use the search function for Redsnapper, you may get one or two threads appear.

Saves everyone repeating themselves.............:)

Oops, sorry, I'm new! Will have a browse now

I am also in the hunt for a tripod, i have been looking at the Manfrotto 190xprob.

I have heard nothing but good about the redsnapper though and have been thinking about one too. My question is does the legs on this fold flat to the ground like the manfrotto and does the centre pole tilt right over 90 degree's.

The reason i ask is i have seen them in action on the landscape where you get right to the ground to pick up foreground detail.

The centre pole does not tilt over, that along with the general build quality makes it much sturdier than the 190 pro.

You can get it flat to the ground using the (supplied) short centre column.

I bought the ball head from Red Snapper and it really is an excellent piece of kit and would highly recommend them :D OK not a vote for the tripod as I haven't seen one, but if the quality is the same and I suspect it is :) it would be a good buy

When you say you can get it flat on the ground is this by means of the legs spread to form it flat on the ground????

The legs can be set at three different angles and it is supplied with two lengths of center column which can have the head sitting on or hanging from (if that makes sense :))

i m in to minds about buying one of these redsnappers will it be strong enough for a canon 40d 300f2.8 lens and a manfrottr 393 head or i was looking at the manfrotto 055 so it would be good to get any info

well the website says it can take 10kg of weight which is a fair amount!

I had my 400d, Grip and 100-400L on it and was still soild if thats any help

The tripod is immense.

I was going to buy a manfrotto tripod I saw in a local camera store but checked on here firs and heard about redsnapper.

The build quality is immense and feels a lot better than the manfrotta one. Twist clips on the legs to tighten makes it easy to adjust quickly and the head is really solid. Comes with Quick release plate as well which is nice :D

I read a review where someone said that the rednsapper is the best tripod this side of 300 quid.

Great tripod, only gripe is that the bag is not big enough to fit the tripod and supplied 3 way head in without removing the handles

Whilst I cannot comment on the 3-way head (I'm using a ballhead and preferring to the pan heads) but for the tripod I don't think you can even compare 055XPROB with Redsnapper one. To get the quality similar to Redsnapper TRI-283 tripod from the well known brands - you will need to look at tripods in the 200 pounds price range which this Manfrotto simply isn't. The TRI-283 is a heavy, solid as a rock and very well made (including the bag which is way much better than some of the well known brands offer). I mean I was a bit sceptical with all that hype over it but then 50 quid is not a large amount to gamble so I got it a few months back. This was by far the best money I have ever spent on any photo equipment. I actually went to the local photo store to compare it with their available set of Manfrottos, Giottos and some others - couldn't even find something that gets close to its quality.

If you are looking for stable and reliable platform for your camera - this tripod gotta be it. Mind you, it is not small so I would not use it as a casual travel tripod.

I was there a few weeks ago, hoped to catch sunrise over lake conistone, what did I get? Rain, lots of it!! Fingers crossed the weather is better for you

Seriously considering the "Redsnapper TRI-283 Tripod and RS-528 3-Way Head Kit" as it definitely seems to have many happy owners, just another question to add to the others....

I'll be using it when hiking in the mountains and wondered if it would be too heavy, I currently use a Velbon Luxi F for this but it isn't as stable as I'd like

all advice appreciated

thanks

simon

It's similar in weight to the 055B so it's not a lightweight model, it does fold away very nicely into the supplied bag which your wife can carry ;)

Cheers Gary, I'm sure it's a big step-up from the Velbon & worth carrying the extra weight.....the wifes already carrying half my walking gear so I can get the DSLR in my rucksac, not sure your suggestions going to go so well

I've got a Manfrotto 486 ballhead which fits comfortably in the bag when attached to the Redsnapper legs.

I think thats the only slight gripe with the redsnapper is that you have to unscrew one of the handles from the 3 way head for it to fit in the bag. at least I havent found a way of doing it without removing the handle

i just keep that one handle poking out the bag, saves a lot of hassle and means the threads don't loosen

Sorry to butt in on this thread.

I'm after a new tripod and just looked at TRI-283 Tripod and RS-528 3-Way Head Kit.

With that model, is it quite easy to put the camera on its side (portrait) rather than landscape and will it be held in place firmly?

What's the difference between 3 way panning head and ball head?

Many thanks.

Lisa

Well the ball head allows movement in all planes at the same time.

3 way head u can lock off movement in certain plains so you could pan left to right with no movement up or down.

I think its possible to have the 3 way head sideways although I havent tried it myself.

This is my 50D/battery-grip/70-200 sitting on my Redsnapper Tripod/head if that helps :)

Like the way you have the neck strap Stratefically placed there :D

The tripod is not only really well made but looks damn sexy too :D

Hi

Thanks for the explanation Kopite. Thanks for posting the photo Mr Gubby, greatly appreciated.

It's my birthday next month so I'll get a Redsnapper tripod.

Lisa

Yer I got one for christmas aswell, its great :D

:) Whist your Mrs is hoiking it up the hill she may well comment that the strap and shoulder support are elasticated slightly for extra comfyness. She will enjoy carrying this.

I am total n00b to the photography scene but do know good engineering when I see it.

The whole experience from Redsnapper is excellent, customer service (Joe is a true Gent), delivery times and the product itself is fantastic. Now I just need a bit of decent weekend weather to go test it (0degC means I stay in and read Understanding Exposure instead ).
