Yes
I cant PM sorry so has to be here.

I would like a wireless flash set up.

I.e - some kind of transmitter on my camera and a pair of flashes in umbrellas firing when the shutter is released

Can i fit a Yongnuo ST-E2 to my camera hot shoe and have 2 468's which are ettl on stands which will fire?

WITHOUT buying anything else for example rf602's?

Im so clueless and its proper confusing!

no.

468's and almost no offbrand flashes are compatible with ETTL.

You need to buy 602's basically, and manually set the power settings on your flashes.

but they state that the 468's are ETTL compatible and isnt that what the ST-E2 is for wireless ETTL?

Wireless TTL
While it works in E-TTL mode in the camera hot shoe, the Yongnuo YN-468, like all other Yongnuos to date, does not support Canon’s wireless lighting system, neither as master nor as a slave flash. There is no TTL sensor built in, and the flash does not understand Canon’s wireless flash language. This means you need to work with other options once you want to trigger your flash in off-camera mode.

okay :S confused - majorly now ..

so is the st-e2 better or the pt04s or rf602?

no its different

the st-e2 is optically based so needs a good line of sight to every flash and can be interfered with by ambient light. It carries a very clever signal enabling either ttl or manual control from the back of the camera (on modern cameras inc 50d-basically if you have menu panes as opposed to 1 big ass scrolly menu like a 5d classic) also hss and everything you could do with on camera flash except rear curtain sync

a 602 is a dumb trigger (with a smart-ish half press detect that wakes up flashes and enables af when used as a wireless shutter) it just fires but it does it using radio, the reliability and range go up with price a PT-04 has crappy range and is unreliable but is cheap, a plus 2 has great range and is bombproof but are a hundred + a unit, 602s fall nicely in the middle with good enough range and reliability but are affordable (think less than a hundred for a set up with a couplea transmitters and recievers - plenty usable for work use for a while)

there is a radio st-e2 like thing but its made by pocketwizard and costs a BOMB, lovely to use but costs

ok so the st-e2 .. is a good piece of kit for a studio i.e my dining room that will never go outside? and i dont need to attach things to the flash etc it can just pick them up in the room?

not really, in the studio you'd be working manual because its just easier, use an st-e2 where you're working quickly in a friendly ambient that won't confuse it, I've used the canon wireless (same tech but a 580 works as master not an st-e2)outside and inside but not with flashes 30 feet away in strong sunlight

ok so in your opinion

i want one flash on the camera

and then something off camera

whih would you buy and you would buy rf602's yeah?

no you want nothing on camera

I would buy 2 lightstands, 2 umbrella adapters an rf602 set and second reciever and 2 of the best flashes I could afford :D

you sir are a saint :)

so ...

2 x YN602 II's
2 x Stands
2 x Umbrella adapters?? (can i have a link lol)
2 x RF602 Recievers
1 x RF602 Transmitter

All done?

And why btw to no flash on camera?!?!

Because you don't have a camera with two hotshoes...:naughty:

lol but i could have one on camera & one off camera lol

cos flash on camera looks ****, we use it when we have to but creative light is almost always off axis

stands - sooo portable but a bit lacking in height, but I have a pair of 13' ones for when I need that

adaptor again a 'frotto rip off but gets the job done nicely

this brolly is your cheapest in for a flexible modifier

I personally am all about the softbox or big mode, but learn with these first :D

flashes and transmitters from graham the rest from calumet who will do you a student discount of 20% which is niiice

thats mega moneys!

amazon do a pair of stands for £19.99 lol

i just need brolleys and adapters

lol but i could have one on camera & one off camera lol

Well, yes you could. I believe the new YongNuo RF603 triggers (not available yet) will let you do exactly that, as they have a ttl pass-through.

Not sure though why, if you are new to off-camera flash, you would be wanting such a feature but

graham might do cheaper brollies

erm I see the really cheap stuff like pt-04s or those stands as a bit of a noob tax as they will break and are proper **** but you learn whether you like the idea on them then buy the good gear

everything I've mention is mid range apart from the flashes which are low end (but there isn't really a mid range speedlight its cheap or oem) the stands are nano rip offs, the adapters are 026 rip offs, I went into triggers in depth above.

Have a read through the strobist 101 gear posts and re evaluate your needs (or budget) ;)

graham how much for a pair of brolleys and ball head adapters? and possibly stands

that would be the uber cheap way of doing it, I've used the stands and adaptors (and hated both) but not tried the brolly - you might miss it being dual duty though

will go get you a strobist link

also srsly graham you should have a link to your thread in your sig - I cba to go look for it to see what you carry now :D

i cant even find his thread!

but need some prices as want to order :)

Can I just ask, I basically want exactly the same as Danny133 and have also been looking at everything he has posted however I was advised that it is best to go for a wireless trigger and 3 transmitters rather than just 2!

I also only want mine for light portrait home use so could I get away with just the 2 rather than 3 as this would save me a bit!

Thanks

im now looking at

2 x YN560's
2 x brollies
2 x stands
2 x adapters
2 x rf602 recievers
1 x rf602 transmitter

Is flash still selling stuff?
