Fancy hacking your Nikon DSLR Firmware

Applies to many many things; but significantly modding motorbikes or cars, as well as electronics; worth knowing why stuff is like it is before you dickaround with it, because you might NOT make it 'better' and you might cause something rather unexpected and unhelpful.
So, why do these cameras have 30minute Video limit?

It's for Tax reasons within the EU cameras that record over 30 minutes attract a higher rate of tax, at least that is the reason that I've read in the past...

30 minute limit is purely for tax reasons not technical. Apparently anything over 29 minutes 59 secs is regarded as a camcorder and therefore taxed at a higher rate.
 
This should not brick your camera, but if it does I and the other Nikon Hacker team members will not have/take responsibility for any damages or liability. I have this firmware on my camera, and have taken a 25 minute video with it, but result may vary. Also damages that may occur due to camera operation times longer than specified by original manufacturer are your responsibility.

I thought the idea was to exceed 30 mins, isn't he confident in it ... or am I missing something? :thinking:
 
Genuinely, how many people need more than 30 mins in 1 cut. Also can your camera deal the 4GB file size issue? Also should you really be using a camcorder if you really need a long take.

Unless you know the answer to these I suspect you shouldn't be messing with the hacked firmware that may or may not kill your camera.
 
I don't think I'd trust something that the developer hasn't tested. Why would he not test it to see if it records past 30 mins?

Cam-Corders have higher VAT than SLR's?!?!
That doesn't sound right! Site sources. EU taxes doesn't cut it. State which countries and sources. It certainly isn't something that applies in the UK, where we have flat-rate purchase VAT.
Do North American market models have the same restriction?
I cant see, a company like Nikon, wasting a marketing opportunity to boast 'long video' as a feature, accross ALL markets, for the sake of thier camera being over-priced by tax in one or two dominions. Or not having firmware revisions specifically for those market areas.

No... sorry, I find that one incredibly hard to swallow without verifiable evidence.

For me , the important thing is not really the video time limit, but the potential to open up the potential of the camera. Even small things, like being able to program certain buttons, to do certain tasks, e.g., ok button for 100% zoom, would be very useful.

So the suggested 30 minute limit is imposed by the World Trade Organisation.... who on thier own webby, where they publish the actual agreement on Info-Tech, they say....

I think people are missing the point here. It's the fact that the firmware has been hacked which may possibly lead to further developments. I suspect the 30 minute video limit was the easiest to implement.

Long answer. I don't do video very often, but when I do it is for something that is one continuous video. For example, I have just tried to take a video of a trip along the Grand Canal in Venice. Got the seat I wanted at the front of the Vaporetto, :D which is no easy feat, but then two thirds along the battery ran out. :bonk: I was worried about not having enough time to record the whole trip with the card, I didn't think the battery would run out. :bang: I also didn't think of the 29:59 limit on the compact, but looks like I'll have stop and start half way though and find a way to cut the together later, I should be able to do that at one of the stops. :) In this case though, one long take of about 40-50mins is what I wanted.

Currently recharging batteries to have another attempt. I just know it won't be as easy to get the same position on the Vaporetto. :shake: :lol:

I'm recording with my compact though, not the DSLR because the compact reacts to changes in light levels and WB better, and can be easily attached to a hand rail with the knock off Gorillapod picked up here. ;)

And the short answer is yes, some people do want to record longer. ;) :lol:

Plenty of event videos last more than half an hour, it'd be good to be able.to.use an slr as the locked off rear camera for events

Exactly that.

Just because the final sequence is only 30 seconds long doesn't mean you only need to record for 30s.
