Hi all,

Just a random question I was pondering over earlier.

Is there anyway of creating a 'increased aperture filter' on Photoshop?

By this I mean if I was to shoot a football match with a 200m f5.6 lens, could you edit the photo in Photoshop to create a convincing edit which looks the photo was shot at f1.8?

I've seen some basic tools such as instagram, but these set a central focus point to create a blurred background rather then using the depth of the photo.

I would use Topaz Lens Effects to do this kind of thing. You create a depth map which sets which part of the photo are in focus and which parts are out of focus. Of course, if part of it is already out of focus, you can't bring it back into focus, so it's best used to give the effect of narrowing the existing depth of field. It can also mimic the effect of various lenses in terms of number of aperture blades and so on. Lens Effects can be used as a plugin to Lightroom, Photoshop CS, Elements, Aperture, and a few other programs.

Another program that can be used as a plugin or standalone is OnOne Software's FocalPoint. It comes with Perfect Layers so you get layers in Lightroom if you use it. It works with CS, Elements, Aperture, etc. I haven't used this one so can't say how good it is.
 
Alien skin bokeh 2 does a pretty good job, but the bad news is all of these programs (even just photoshop) all need you to make the selection first.
