Afternoon kids,

I'm heading 'home' this weekend for a bit of 'r&r' (for r&r, see massive drinking sesh....:D) and reckon the views of the harbour might offer an opportunity for some fake tilt shift, which is something I've not tried before.

I was planning to take photos from an angle like this

but I can play with my position on the surrounding high ground and even head to the other side of town to shoot from the other side.

Would I get the effect I'm looking for from this high up - do I need to zoom into the scene to get the 'toy town effect'?? I'll be taking my Sigma 17-70 and Canon 55-250 plus a tripod if that's any help.

PS. That's not one of mine, I haven't really snapped my hometown properly yet.

I have only played around with it tiny bit, but would think you might need to be higher and probably closer in than that shot. Could work though, not sure, but I think you need more of an angle to get the full effect.

I could get higher, but I would have to be further away. There's a multi story car park in the town centre which I could shoot from the top of, but I would be further to the right of this picture and may not have as much in the way of interest in the shot as a result.

I reckon you would be ok getting a shot from the wall just in front of where that shot is.
Here was a shot I took from the london eye and attempted some tilt shiftyness.

Hmm, I'd either go to the top of the steps and just use the harbour for the tilt shift (or go wide angle of you can), or maybe go round to the Beacon looking back into town. That or do what you said, and go to the path by the loop road near the bridge over Victoria Road.

There's a very easy way via www.tiltshiftmaker.com, or alternatively there are some good tutorials on the web on how to do the 'real deal' with Photoshop.

Here's one of Volterra ampitheatre I made using the website above:

I hadn't thought about the loop road, good call Hawker, though I'd definitely need to zoom in from there. I'm thinking more and more about going the bransty side though as I'd get the Beacon and mebbe even the candlestick (wonder where my username came from..... :D :D) as landmarks if I aim harbour-wards??

Good idea, the Bransty side might be good, one other idea would be to go up on the Kells side on a match day and see if you can do a tilt shift of the recri with players on the pitch :)

i have this application called Tilt Shift AIR

http://labs.artandmobile.com/tiltshift/ Can be downloaded here.

its very effective, it has both linear and radical center radius's, and contrast/vignetting perks too, a swish little app for creation cheap n cheerful results!
