Counterfeit batteries CAN be DANGEROUS as they have been known to explode. In addition, fake batteries CAN RUIN your equipment, costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Just because something can doesn't mean it will. There's always been a lot of scaremongering regarding unbranded cheaper batteries for cameras. Yes it might be slightly more of a risk but it doesn't mean that the worst will happen. But the massive undercutting of official batteries hurts canons (or other brands) pockets is reasons enough for them to be pushing how 'dangerous' they may be.

I've got an official one and 3 unbranded batteries for my d700. unbranded lose charge quicker when not being used but other than that i've had no problems in 2 years. I did however, first start with a d60 and the official battery for that leaked all inside within 3 months of having it and it resulted in getting a replacement.

I always use my unbranded batteries in my grip as well, extra level of safety there. At the end of the day, it's up to the person buying and using them :)

I use fake batteries for my 5DII bought from 7dayshop, and they're perfect., Same amount of shots or more per charge.

i think counterfiet and 3rd party are two different things though. fake canon branded batteries i wouldnt trust but likewise the 7dayshop 3rd party batts are perfectly fine.

Oh I see, I didn't realise there was a difference. Well indeed, screw using anything branded as Canon that isn't by Canon.

I'm surprised anyone could confuse fake/counterfeit with third-party goods, especially a man of your calibre Mr Headshot. :)

I use Calumet's third party batteries in my Nikons and have complete confidence in them.
I'm sure a major photo supplier such as calumet would be horrified if their own brand/third party batteries where to cause damage to equipment.
As for batteries from the like of ebay NO THANKS !

I don't really keep up with camera technology, I'd have to look at the numbers on the lens to tell you what focal lengths I own.

No problems with six batteries bought from 7Dayshop. TBH I haven't noticed any differents in performance.

I've had about 15 or more cheap ones [e bay - £5 or less] over the past 5 to 6 years. All but a couple have lasted 2, 3 or more years. The couple that didn't, they lasted about a year. That's still financially a better deal than an original Canon battery.

When I bought my camera it came with one genuine and one canon "fake", only found out it was fake when it died after taking 2 shots and would sit in the charger flashing away for only 10 minutes to "full", then only taking 2 shots again. Looking at it closer the contacts were a different colour inside and the label wasn't perfect but it was very close. It's put me off buying branded goods at lower prices so trying the 7dayshop ones in the grip instead.

I've got 6 3rd party batteries off ebay to go with my 2 genuine ones and the 3rd party ones work just as well. They charge as fast and the charging temp is within 2 degrees overall. As for cheap 'Canon' labelled batteries I wouldn't touch them or trust them.

I've had problems with 'fake' batteries in my phone, contacted the UK seller and demanded a refund. I paid through paypal and they said the couldn't refund me unless i sent them back to the seller...to be sold again probably.
Just searched the Tradekey website...found this and it made me giggle..

Was planning on buying mine in the next week or so, what you think...buy here and save some cash...lol...only joking..
I love how even the blurb is ripped from the Canon website...

Paypal wouldn't instruct you to return counterfeit goods to the seller, they would ask you to provide proof the goods were fake and then ask you to sign a declaration stating you had destroyed them.

Would you like to see my pic of a box full of counterfeit Canon battery chargers being incinerated? :naughty:

Don't confuse after market/3rd party batteries with fakes/counterfeits.

It's only fake or counterfeit if it's branded with Canon/Nikon logo etc

I have numerous 'after market' batteries for my 60D and for various other cameras,
all bought on Ebay, and I've only ever had one that failed after 6 months
(refused to hold more than a 40% charge)

My first was bought back in 2007 for my 30D and it's still going strong
where the original Canon battery is dead!

Come to think of it so is the original Canon battery for my little IXUS
and that's still going strong on a £6 ebay battery...
