Well, anyone spotted any?

I recently saw some batteries for very good prices...too good actually...so I thought if they could knock off Sandisk cards it couldn't be too difficult to knock-off batteries?

Anyone come across anything like it?

Dont get fake confused with 3rd party ones, fake ones are one they copy the packaging for precisely and sell slightly cheaper, 3rd party ones are just ones made by someone else.

The only thing you buy when trying to shop for bargains on batteries is grief. Go buy a brand name battery. They work.

Ebay is littered with fake batteries,if it looks too good to be true etc......

I do get the difference between fakes and 3rd party but the ones I saw clearly pretended to be the real thing packaging and all...the price was a give-away though...

So glad I didn't buy them...

Thanks!

My thoughts exactly...that is why I would not even consider generics...again, you get what you pay for!

I'd have to dispute the above - had several 'non brand' batteries from Amazon for my 40D. On all the ones I have had, they have been nigh on equal to the official Canon one. Maybe I have just got lucky - but no complaints so far!

oh no you will always get the "oh I only buy branded brigade and dont care what I pay" and the "ebay ones are just as good" my experience is the latter, if you want to pay daft prices for branded batteries, please do, I have had excellent experience with the non branded third party ones.

Same here, I have 3 3rd party batteries from Kerso for my 50D and 2 3rd party batteries for my 550D from ebay. No problems in over a year of use and just as good as the Canon versions. Why pay £50 for a battery when you can get the equivalent battery without "Canon" on the side for less than £4? I also use 3 generic batteries in my Video Camera.

I'd have to be crazy to spend £400 on batteries when I get the same performance for £40.

yeah ! sort of . but it's hidden in my battery grip, so i doubt it would damage my camera. but the knowing that it's a fake kills me :D

So they do work at least...not total junk?

How do they compare with other non-genuine batteries?

just bought one for my alpha. past experiences bought a heap for my PSP and never had any problems with them

You said it all in your opening line - too good actually.

There are fake batteries on eBay, I was unfortunate enough to buy one some months ago. I got all my money back OK, the seller claimed he didn't know they were fakes he was selling.

There is a whole page on the Nikon site, listing the subtle differences in the fakes and the genuine ones. Even Nikon admit the fakes are hard to spot.

I have bought unbranded batteries for both my Minolta and canon cameras.
on every occasion they have performed better and outlasted the Genuine ones.

Camera makers do not make batteries, they have them made under contract by the large generic makers.

As such they are no more likely to be better or worse than unbranded ones. But they will be more expensive as they have the added camera makers mark up.

Previous generations of cameras used off the shelf Batteries made by numerous manufacturers... some were definitely better than others.

Fakes are something else entirely, and are probably universally bad. they purport to be what they are not, for maximum profit.

I only bought it as I wasn't careful and thought that I've spotted a bargain. LOL . I don't see the difference between genuine and the fake. same amount of clicks. everything seems to be ok. but I wouldn't put one in 1ds or other flagship dslr's . + I would better use 3rd party nonames, at least they are not pretending to be genuine.

And what makes you think that forgers can't copy a branded battery?

Last time I looked (about a year ago) on the Duracell web site they were estimating that between 20 and 25% of the "Duracell" batteries being sold in high street retail outlets (e.g. Argos, B&Q, ASDA, Tesco, et al) in the UK were counterfeit. They even had a page showing how to tell the real ones from the fakes.

Very true and sensible...REAL cameras could work without any battery though!!

:eek:Yes, this is true...go ask your dad or someone if you are not old enough to know this is true:D:p

My concern with this thread was not so much about buying a second rate product but, rather, about buying a complete lemon.

Also might be the purist (SNOB ?:D) in me...generic? No thank you...FAKE? NEVER!!!

:naughty:

Double and triple A batteries have no place in this conversation.

Ebay is just not a place to buy batteries. Here, maybe. Ebay, no.

Im always worried about buying third party batteries in case they freak out and fry my camera...

Is there a need to be worried?

I have used 3rd party batteries on all my digital cameras since I bought my first 10D many years ago. Never had an issue.

Ebay is just not a place to buy batteries. Here, maybe. Ebay, no.

And your reasoning is?

All my third party batteries have come from ebay. They are cheap, and they last longer than the Canon batteries - what's the problem?

I'll stick with my fake OEM Lp-e6's in my 5D2

£18 for a battery thats chipped, lasts just as long and works without leaking or going into nuclear meltdown. I'm happy to use them.

I've been in the electronics game 33 years man and boy and seen those exploding fakes.

What do I do, I wait until others report batteries as being okay and then buy from the same place.

I've used a number of BP511's of which only one was duff and that was just plain dead. I now have 2 Lp-e6's that work perfectly and even contain all the moulding idiosyncrasies as the original Canon one, go figure where thy where manufactured LOL.

Check your cameras. They might be on fire right now. Also, your credit card or paypal accounts might have a zero balance.....

Just kidding. I hate giving advice to anyone to go to ebay to buy used or 3rd party batteries. I just can't say that with a straight face and feel like I was giving good advice to anyone.

Oh well, if anything, the apparently not-so-superior "real" batteries at least have a warranty attached...which, in itself, sets them apart from Fleebay "bargains"...

I posted last night about stupidly long charge times on a two year old Nikon D40 battery so I'm currently looking for a replacement.

I'm torn on this as I don't think the original battery has lasted long considering the light use it's had but when you read the reviews on this page, you do wonder if cheap, spurious batteries are worth it:

Yes, they are! Bought these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2x-Battery-Ni...0?pt=UK_Photography_DigitalCamBatt_RL&afsrc=1 a while back for my D5K and they,ve been great...higher capacity than the OEM one so last a bit longer too.

I have three batteries for my old 40D - one Canon and two cheapy's from 7dayshop (2 for a tenner at the time). The Canon one has packed up but the 7dayshop ones are still going strong after several years.

i saw on ebay a battery and charger for £22 i was gonna buy it (as i have NO battery yet) is this a very bad idea, i can post the link if people wont to see.

I think we looked at the same stuff:naughty:

Or in fact made by the same company, in the same factory as the "genuine" ones, but without the printing of "Canon"/"Nikon"/"Sony" etc :D

Got 2 for my Canon 50D, they look, feel & act like the Canon batts for only 10% of the price :bonk:

I never leave any battery in the camera when not in use!

I think folks are mixing up "unbranded" vs fake items masquerading as the genuine article.

This is fake for example (no one can sell a genuine new battery at that price)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GENUINE-NEW-E...500952586?pt=UK_Photography_DigitalCamBatt_RL

This is fake:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-EN-EL3e...532202717?pt=UK_Photography_DigitalCamBatt_RL

This is fake:

These are fake:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-NP-FM500H-N...89587421?pt=UK_Photography_CamcorderAccess_RL

Folks are confusing "unbranded" (which is fine if that's what you want) vs counterfeit items trying to fool folks into thinking they are the real thing..

No, I think I figured that out all by myself...

This here is from a seller I had a look at...pretends to be the real deal but can never be at that price...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BP-511A-Batte...-20Da-D60-/170528372634?pt=Batteries_Chargers

It might work, it might not...it is not a lot of money to lose but what if it damages my camera...
