i am going to fairford air show this weekend never really shot jets before any tips would be most helpfull

which is the best day to go

i have the canon 400l and the 100 400L which should i take

100-400 has a great rep for airshows as you can zoom out for when they get close

400L is a prime, primes ftw

100-400mm if you're not used to composing aircraft shots with a prime. That way you should get more savers as you can zoom and compose.
they can be fast beggars at times! ;)
Also dont forget you might want something widish for the static shots. You can get some really good unusual angles.

My tips would be, 1000 shutter speed for jets and maybe bump up your iso if cloudy and 250 for prop aircraft and heli`s, a zoom lens is the best choice as you got more flexibility, 300/400 focal length is ideal bringing it back to 50/100 for wide angle stuff, like the red arrows in formation.

Have you got tickets? if not get there very early as traffic will be bad around Fairford. Judging on the weather forecast (if you can believe it) Saturday looks the best day to go weather wise (could change).

Shutter speed is important, jets around 1/1000 sec, props 1/250-320 sec, Helicopters 1/200-250 sec until you become confident. Try and achieve this shutter speeds, adjust the ISO settings if needed. While panning with the aircraft, get it in focus, take 2 or 3 shot bursts while still smoothly panning with the aircraft, with you camera don't machine gun the aircraft to death as you refresh autofocus rate isn't that great and you will limit the number of images you'll keep. Only other thing is try and at least get the aircraft filling 2/3's of the view finder, anything smaller and its mainly a blob in the sky.

Just a tip. Waddington advertised that the gates open at 8.00am. I got there at 6.40am. They opened up and let us in. I was the third car on base. It gave us plenty of time to set up and get a viewing position on the spectator line. Take a couple of windbreaks and chair and drinks. Suncream too. Hopefully you will need it.
Be sensible with the windbreaks and make yourself an enclosure. Dont go daft and take up too much space. Just enough to allow you free movement for panning etc.
Don't worry, there will be plenty of others doing it. Even tents get put up.
Not sure Fairford will let you in early, but worth atry.

thanks guys i was leaning towards the zoom as it seems to get good reports cant take any windbreaks or chairs stuck for space as we are on a weeks holiday.
got to smuggle my fishing gear in to the car as well
