So Windows update fails and causes a re-boot every time the laptop is switched on .

When the laptop is switched off the blue screen shows "Installing 8 Windows Updates" (or something like that).
When powering the laptop back up the screen shows "Configuring Windows Updates" (or something like that).
After a few moments it says "Failure configuring windows update - reverting" then switches the laptop off.
Powering up again gives a brief "Preparing to configure windows" then the logon screen ... and off it goes again when switched off!

I have done a manual update via Windows Update but just get exactly the same thing.

Dell XPS L702X running Windows 7.

Any help would be much appreciated, TIA.

Thanks to David357 for the resolution to this problem:-

I had the same problem, so deselected all 9 updates, then installed them 2 at a time. PC went through the installs, restarts, and no further problems. Too much information at one time??
I left the internet explorer update until last.

Take any docs/images etc off the laptop that you was to keep and give it a fresh windows installation.

New install just a month or so ago when the laptop was bought so I don't really want to do anything that intensive at this stage, but thanks for responding.
This is a common problem and I have had it before on another machine ... there is a way to force the update but I've forgotten it!

Try restarting in safe mode. It may let you. Press f8 loads of times as it boots. The run a restore to a point prior to your problem.
I've had it in the past, can be a pain to sort which update is causing it but a restore point might give you. Clue.

I'm having the same problem.

I got an update last week that failed, and I got a message saying that something was reverting to ??? (Sorry I'm not a techy and didn't pay too much attention)

Now every time I switch on I have to wait for updates to download. When I switch off they run themselves, but fail My machine seems to spend all day looking for updates to install which all fail. I've tried all the manual dodges that I know but can't get anything to work.

I need to know some way to forcibly install the update, but can't find a way how to. Even asked an engineer friend to come and have a looksee.

Let me know if you sort it out.

Bizarrely, after just re-starting again it seems to have accepted the updates ... maybe needed two re-starts after the manual update
Thanks for help :)

I had this problem with the latest update on my W7 64bit machine. I found by manually installing the updates one by one, with a re-start each time sorted it.

I spoke too soon, next power up and back to square one - system restore can't restore either :gag:

Same problem and same solution for me.
