I know this is a stupid question and whats really annoying is I did exactly what I want to do yesterday but I faded the image out too much so it's too faint.

Anyway, I'm using Gimp and have an outline map of a country in black that I want to fade so I can put some test over it. I have been doing the following:

1. Open Image
2. Add new all white layer
3. slide opacity of new white layer down to reveal the map outline

I'm sure this worked yesterday but I must be missing a key step as today I get no map with any opacity above 50% and the full dark outline with any opacity below 50%.

This is driving me mad so any help would be gratefully recieved!

i'd do your text (or whatever it is you're putting over the map) first. Create a new image with white background - then put all your text on it.

then copy your map image over the text and reduce the opacity of the map to suit.

Does that sound about right for what you wanted to achieve?

Spot on cheers, which thinking about it is probably what I did yesterday!
