Today at work was not a happy one, seems one of our colleagues has called in sick and announced on Facebook that they are off for an active weekend.
Rather a stupid thing to do as it has been bought to the attention of the boss, who quite rightly is not happy.
Why do people do that, we are lucky in that at present we get up to 6 months on full pay when sick, if this happens too often that will
soon stop and mean those genuinely unable to work will suffer.
Any one who is a contact on my FB page knows it's full of useless info and silly comments, which is how I see it, a place to muck about
I rarely put anything personal on there, you just never know who is reading it

Indeed, though its been going on long before Facebook, in the early 90s my dads company used to do a lot of cleaning on large building sites in London, as it actually worked out cheaper for them to hire a company from the midlands and cover the costs of B&B accommodation than it was to hire locally, anyhow the guys used to work on a two weeks in London then a two weeks local basis on afternoon as my dad was leaving the bank he spotted but wasn't seen himself a guy that was supposed to be working in London stumbling out of a local pub, anyway my old man decided to phone up the charge hand for the job to see that all was progressing well that all materials and equipment was fully stocked etc...the following day my dad drove down to London with 3 additional guys and the spare keys for the three minibuses we had down there...long story short they had been working a scam where only half would actually go and do the work so every other rotation they effectively got a two week paid holiday...this was worked out after checking site log in books etc ... All were dismissed on site and the three minibuses were driven back...empty :(

No sympathy what so ever with the facebook idiot.

For the same reason (that anybody can read it) I will not put on here what could happen if any of my guys did this.
 
the title would more accurately be stupid skiving idiots beware - if you don't take sickies unless you are actually ill the problem doesnt arise - mind you the general idiocy of the population never fails to amaze me ... its like the idiots who video themselves speeding, drifting, or otherwise driving like bellends and then put the videos on youtube and are really suprised when they get prosecuted

What like the twonker in his new BMW that took it drifting and binned it sideways into the Armco then tried to claim he got sideswiped on the road outside track...that was till his insurance checked Youtube :eek:
 
My employers have been very understanding of my sick leave of late. I would sooner poke my eyes out than take pthe p155.
But then again I also don't do the t***terbook thing :-)
 
same here Ruth, I was signed off for 6 weeks with a broken elbow but have been working all that time apart from a couple of days following the op to repair it,
albeit on light duties but I have still found things to to do to fulfill my contracted hours, even though they are mind numbingly boring.
It means that although the rest of the workforce have to share my delivery I am doing stuff that saves them the time it takes to do their share so they don't mind too
much.
Can't wait to get back to normal as it is not only meaning I am stuck inside but I also can't use my camera :( Stlll at least I have been given the OK to drive :)

Good bosses are hard to beat. ...though there are times.....

The thread title should read 'Facebook users, don't be an idiot' ;)

Personally my job is worth more to me than the possibility of getting a few days off without having holiday, so wouldn't do it anyway. But to announce something that would put you at risk of a sacking on facebook is idiotic!

^This a million times. I always astounds me the risks people take with their employment for so little advantage. I've seen people sacked for fiddling their expenses for as little as a couple of quid, and that's with a very generous expenses policy in the first place. Some people I used to work with viewed sick days as an additional annual leave allowance. Curiously, after a redundancy cull a few years ago where sick days were factored into the scoring process for the unfortunate (repeated shorts absences scored much more highly that fewer longer absences) the sick record for the site improved dramatically. Everyone just got healthy all of a sudden....
 
A place i used to work the boss would check your facebook page and wo be god you where even logged in and made a status update if you were sick...... her thinking was if your too ill to work you should be too ill to use facebook... but i have to say when i did have to take time off it was for a problem with my legs. (i worked in a shop so couldn't work) so i wasn't too ill to use facebook . but that said as perthe OP's post we had idiots like that too.

Your boss was wrong, for many jobs even if they require no physical effor, the level of concentration required to do them is unsustainable when ill, but the level of concentration required to post "urgh, I feel like rubbish and why is daytime TV so appalling?" on facebook is entirely within the capabilities of an ill person.

I'll leave aside the question of why anyone would have their boss as a friend on facebook (or the reverse). I've known my employer for over 20 years and get on well with him, as I do with all my work colleagues, but can't think why I'd want them on my facebook.
 
not forgetting that its not just current bosses who check facebook - I always remember the prosective interview candidate who put a status up date that said " Going for a job with ***** on monday they have some phat places for raves, and i'll have all the keys, it'll be sick, recognise "

oddly enough he wasn't our sucessful candidate

Mark.. I was stupid only 14 of us working there new to the area ect ect ect..... needless to say she was removed as where most of the other people i worked with.

Quite... and I feel much the same. Last year I had chemo for five months and manged to only take between one and three days off after each session. I don't want a round of applause or anything - I really wanted to keep as much normality as I could - but there were days that I probably shouldn't have been there and probably wasn't all that productive. I did also have to take and additional 4 or so months too though for my five surgeries. My boss was awesome about it all and my company gives 6 months paid sick leave plus viewed the days of my chemo as appointments and gave those to me too. They also let me work from home every third thursday so the district nurses could come and take my blood and maintain my picc line for the chemo.

I have absolutely no sympathy with people who throw sickies. None at all.
 
Not just sickie throwing fraudsters that get caught out by social media postings. Yet another V#!? potential councillor has been suspended for voicing his beliefs.

If the only evidence the employer has is a written Facebook post, he'd be hard pressed to dismiss initially.

true - he should have kept his powder dry till they posted a load of pictures of themselves enjoying the active weekend

The boss didn't see it, he was told, so witnesses are there, wouldn't mind betting the original post has gone now though

Even if it weren't it's just a Facebook post. A claim. Photos however would be a different matter altogether.

Ruth is right - a member of staff puts 'im not really sick, just pulling a sicky' on facebook - you try to discipline them and they say "oh no I was really sick it was just a joke on FB" what are you going to do next ?

Hence why if it were one of my team i'd say nothing band just keep an eye on the FB page - if they were silly enough to follow up with pictures of themselves posted while they wee alledgedly sick but showing they weren't then action could be taken.

If they don't i'd just mention it in passing when they returned to work - so that they'd know, i know and hopefully won't pull sickies in the future

That's the clever way to do it.

Many years ago when I was young and foolish, a few of us would occasionally go down the pub for an extended lunch break. One day after sneaking back in the back way, we were called into a manager's office but didn't get the telling off we were expecting. Instead he said "As you work in the same building as another department, I would appreciate it if you took your lunch break at the same time as them, otherwise they might think you are taking more time than you are entitled to".

We came away realising that he knew we had taken extra time and more importantly, realising that he knew that we knew that. I gained a lot of respect for him that day.

Whatever the legal side of things are, it's not a good thing to do is it ?
TBH it has caused bad feelings amongst the rest of the workforce who saw it too, it puts more pressure on
others to cover for the sickee
