I believe, as the condition they are "afflicted" with is still referred to as dwarfism.....Dwarf is still OK. :-)
 
But no poking fun at intellectually challenged short people. Its not big and its not clever!

"Midget" is the word you want to avoid if you don't want to p1ss a dwarf off. They refer to themselves as little people, or dwarves. Ruth is right. "Vertically challenged" would probably get you a kick in the nuts... well.. the knee perhaps ;) Oooh!... a dwarf joke... !!!! The outrage!... If you can't see why that wouldn't be offensive to a little person, you're missing the whole point I made in the "other" thread.

But the words all mean the same. Why are some words bad, and others ok. Is small soon going to be taboo?
 
You'd have to ask a little person. I'm just relaying what they've told me. I don't know why "midget" is offensive to them. Do I need to know why it's offensive before I respect their wishes? Why question it as if you have a right to? They don't like it.. so don't do it.

No.. of course small isn't offensive, because they ARE small. That's not a stereotype, or even remotely negative.. it's just a fact. They're small. They're not ashamed of being small, and being small in itself isn't a bad thing.

Any way... leave this for the other thread... LOL

So our language is dictated to us purely on the basis if someone finds it offensive its taboo?

Midget is just a word for something/someone small. Remember the MB Midget, it was called Midget because it was small.

Can I call a fat person fat, or do I have to use large/obsolesce or horizontally upscale or whatever new age word you use to describe fat people

Yes.. of course. If a black person finds being called a nigger offensive, then we don't use it out of respect for their wishes, and general fairness.

No.. fat is fat so far as I'm aware, although I'm sure there are some fat people, who given a preference would rather just be called big. Again.. ask a big person... then respect their wishes. Who are you to judge whether they have a valid reason to decide whether YOU should call them what YOU want to call them anyway? :)

You wouldn't say, "Just add a midget amount of salt".. or "Damn.. these screws are really midget" though would you.. be honest. There's a connotation there that they perhaps don't want to be associated with. Again... what does it matter to you? Is it important that you call them midgets or something?

it comes from the latin word black. Black, coloured, it all depends on the context used

I might say I would add a smidgen of salt, which is an accepted phrase based on the word midget for a small amount.

Its the context of the word used that matters really.

Exactly.... so why even consider "calling" them a Smidgen, or a midget. Dwarf is acceptable because they suffer from dwarfism, which is just the condition that causes them to be small, but I know for a fact they just prefer to be called little... because that's what they are? Why would you even object to that, and make arguments to justify calling them a midget.. as I said.. why is it so important to you that you call them midgets? If they don't like it, just don't do it. Why must they defend themselves and justify their choices to you?
