Facebook scammer tried it on with my Nikon gear

Our alarm has been on the blink for years and I would like to get a new one and cameras. I have a decent quote, it's just getting around to ringing the bloke.

Sorry to hear you nearly got scammed. There are some right a-holes out there for sure.
Just my little opinion with regards to Ring doorbells and the like.
I have read numerous reports in the press - I know, they can't be trusted any further than your 6'4" Irish chap - about how Ring doorbells are watched by Amazon and they apparently keep records of your movements and other data like that. I wouldn't have one under any circumstances.
Likewise, I'd never have any form of "Alexa" equipment in my house either. Who would allow an open microphone to sit in their private abode listening in to all kinds of conversations, especially one linked to the outside world. Dangerous, or what!? But to go buying an open microphone linked to the internet and god knows where else and leaving it in your private space? Really?
As for FaceTube? Well. I've binned that off completely too.
A little story for you.
I had a company car on order. It was going to kill me to wait the 9 months it was going to take to arrive. Knowing my daughter would drive me crazy, asking on an almost daily basis, "Any news on the car Dad?" for the next 9 months, I decided to keep it up my sleeve. Well, just as the lockdown struck early 2020, I get a call from the office saying that my new car was arriving the next day, and I could go collect it. Whoop! Whoop! I called my daughter into my home office and proudly showed her a picture of my new car on the internet, telling her that we'll have it the next day. Lo, and behold, within 20mins of me showing her the picture, she comes back to me saying "Look what's just popped up on the side bar of her FaceTube page". Yeap! The self same car, and in the same bloody colour! Now apart from liking whatever car Dad is driving, my daughter doesn't drive or take any interest in cars at all. You tell me that big brother isn't watching us.
I know that we are watched all of the time. You can't go anywhere in a car without a camera watching you. Our credit cards tell more about us than anyone would like them too. Etc. Etc. But why make it easy for them?

I mentioned a while back on here that I get bombarded with adverts full of pictures of scantily clad ladies in underwear despite never shopping at JDSports or others or ever knowingly visiting their websites. I assume because Mrs WW does but on her own devices, not mine. I do wonder if she gets the camera, lens, watch and car adverts that are meant for me but she hasn't mentioned any.

Yes my wife gets fed up of getting Bremont, Tag Heuer, Hublot, Aston Martin, Jaguar pictures and the like on her Instagram feed. Can't think why though? :whistle:

The most annoying ones are when you actually buy something and then get plagued with ads for the same thing — this even seems to happen with suggestions on Amazon when you have just bought the damned thing on Amazon :mad:

I once looked at a device which you could use to record your CD's, hundreds of them, onto a hard drive and play them. I only looked once and had never heard of them before but since then I've seen adds for them every single day... So it looks like some products or companies are more active and agressive in this than others. I wont mention the name just in case doing so leads to even more bombardment.

I have sold many items on GumTree and have had a few fake buyers, and I get the usual can you post it, can you please post it my friends address, can you post it to Nigeria, etc, etc

Though I have never had 6'4'' irish guy at my door and though I am well built if he is a traveller they fight very, very well ! !

Only ever sold one higher priced item for cash on collection. I insisted on meeting in the local bank and had the money checked as I paid it in. Good place to do business with plenty of cctv coverage too
Buyer was ok when I suggested it so figured they were genuine

This is why I insisted on a Bank transfer, I never knew you could fake these, this whole situation has left me drained

Building Society cheques were always considered safe too until they weren't anymore.

Hope this dreadful experience is now over for you and your wife.

I met up with someone last weekend to buy an expensive watch. Paid bank transfer, which took around 15 minutes to process and arrive in the seller’s account.

I certainly wouldn’t turn up to meet a stranger with £x,000 on me in cash.
 
I must say, as a diminutive female, this is all very scary. I’d have thought the buyer coming to your house would be the safer option. I requested cash and pick up the only time I tried to sell a lens via Facebook. I had so many dodgy queries, I withdrew it.

About the worst thing that happened there was that he put his bank details into crook’s phone — so he potentially has captured his password etc!

Wow that's very similar and the photo of the fake app was the exact same app he used on me, you hear about things like this but never think they will happen to you

I gave him my sort code and account number but obviously no password, by doing a bank transfer this has to be completed anyway, my banking app requires my fingerprint to log in, can he do anything with my details?

I think you'r best bet is have a talk to you'r bank and explain it to them, they should be able to tell you what to do.

No, the sort code & a/c number are more or less public. I was only referring to the article in the Edinburgh News where obviously no fingerprint was involved.

It's called targeted advertising, and yes they are all listening. I was talking to someone who writes the code/whatever for this stuff at a garden party last year. They also put stuff that other people who bought the same car also bought, maybe garage doors or whatever as it's possible you'd buy them too.

I'm a dog lover but have never had one. I tend to get on with children and animals and they usually like me :D

That was stupid. Why would he think they needed his bank details on their phone?
 
Whenever I've sold anything expensive on gumtree etc, I watch them arrive and take note of the car reg number. Could have dodgy plates though.
If they were on foot I'd be suspicious.

IIRC, the pens used to work on the old paper notes but are redundant against fake polymer ones. UV pens and sensitive fingers work on the new ones.

You can tell- use the AskMid database and run the plate on one of these tyre finder sites. If it brings up the make and model of the correct car, its legit. If it's on AskMid it's legit.

If it fails one or both these tests - call dibble
