Facebook registration - photo ID required ?

How? I could scan someone else's ID. They've nothing to check it against.
FB is a data mining operation. In the course of doing so, they suck up info on non-members; they just can't do anything with it until that individual signs up and agrees to their T&Cs.
They will have something to check against.

I read the post you responded to Keith but never mind.

So why did you ask the question?

Did you not understand the fact that I was agreeing with what Ruth had to say?

Or are you just baiting?

What makes me laugh about this whole thread is that people give Facebook all sorts of lovely bits of information and data about themselves on a daily basis yet get their knickers in a twist about this.

If you do not want to play by Facebook's rules then get out of their sandpit.

This is the message I was responding to, nothing thee that stipulated ID, just "Upload a photo of you that clearly shows your face"

There seems to be 2 separate issues, from a little googling, new registrations are being asked for the upload of a photo showing their face while some existing users are having their accounts locked for whatever reasons and Facebook are demanding copies of photo ID to unlock the existing account.

Facebook definitely seem to be overreaching even further with regards to data grabbing these days.

I get the theory, but how do they know it's definitely you. What are they able to check against?

I wondered about that.
They also say that they need user's dates of birth to provide the best Facebook experience for them. Why would anyone trust them with their true DOB ?

If you do actually give an up to date photo, then how do you know they will delete it.

There is no way of knowing that and I would think that most folk will suspect that it will either not be deleted or sent elsewhere for use/storage before being removed from their databases. They would have created less suspicion if they had said upfront that ID pics will be retained indefinitely.

wait are we talking about PHOTO ID or just a PHOTO like the screenshot someone posted?

facebook will occasionally ask for PHOTO ID to confirm identity. if its just a PHOTO then that sounds different, unless you specifically ask for your account to be deleted with all of its data (posts photos etc) then you may be trying to reactivate an old profile. Or if you're registering with same/similar details to your old account or someone elses then that may flag a check. Sounds like they may want to perform a quick facial recognition on existing data.

Account cloning on facebook is becoming a particular issue at the moment, additional security checks may be required from time to time. It's not totally uncommon for companies to request photo id as confirmation, I've had to provide a photocopy of a passport to one provider in the past (cant remember but it was a big name like Microsoft or Adobe).

okay, just clearing that up because while the topic mentions Photo ID the screenshot does not.

like i say your details are probably causing a flag on existing details within the system and assuming your old account was never deleted (afaik you have to ask facebook specifically) they probably want to check youre legit.

When I closed my old account Facebook confirmed my action and said that it would actually just lie dormant for a time (I think they said 1 year, but I cannot be sure that my memory is accurate on that point) and would automatically revert to being active if I ever logged in during that period.

Exactly what are they checking it against?

Other accounts?
trying to ensure people don't create 'fictitious' profiles which could be possibly used for nefarious purposes.
Ensuring you adhere to the age standards?

Indeed, but me, for instance...never had a FB account. No twitter...none of the early ones either. No account or membership where I've had to provide ID of any kind.
Without going to government agencies, there's nothing they could check against.

They don't like people having multiple accounts, but it can't be too hard to game the system (I'm almost tempted to try just to see - the 'worst' that could happen is that they would block me). Easy enough to find an image of a stranger online, tweak it a little, remove or change exif data, then post that as 'proof'.

This may be a useful link: http://backgroundchecks.org/justdeleteme/

My FB account is not my name, it's in my cat's ..... and it is his photo as the profile picture .... but I did actually use my email and gave had no problem with it so far .... :D

But that's OK, the check will do its job.

Whereas I have a FB acct already, so they'd know I was creating a duplicate.

They seem rather keen to get a photograph of me I have just had a 2nd reminder email asking for it. Think I may send them one of Lord Lucan. I don't suppose he would have had a Facebook registration at any time.

But if you've never had an account they won't ask for one.

They're asking for one to reactivate an account, presumably it will match a photo already on the archived account, or a photo that was tagged as the user before they deactivated it.

I had an account 5 years ago, but never had to submit a photo ID to open it therefore there is nothing for them to check a new photo against.

You never uploaded a photo of yourself or were tagged in a photo?

Incorrect, I went to set up a brand new account and they asked for it, check back in this thread.

Absolutely never.

Today, despite not having completed my registration, Facebook have emailed me a list of 8 people that I can consider adding to "my friends list". Most odd.

If anyone you know has the farcebook app on their phones, and info (name, address, phone#, email, even a photo) on you is in their phone contacts list, facebook will have it. Also any txts and emails sent to/from you that were accessed from those phones.
Not being a member (hell, not being online at all) will not stop them having a file on you. spy.gif

Ergo...
A negative search would prove a positive ;)

I've got a great big roll of industrial tin foil here if you'd care to fashion a hat. ;)
