Anyone know the optimum image size for uploading to facebook?!

If you're feeling extra helpful, are there different optimums for portrait and/or landscape?!

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!!

Facebook Blog Feb 2011

Higher Resolution

Starting today, we will be rolling out support for print-quality, high-resolution photos. And unlike on many other online services, you don't need any kind of premium or paid account.

We're increasing the size of the photos stored from 720 pixels to 2048 pixels on the largest edge, for an 8 times increase overall. I'm really excited to be launching this feature.

No point in re-sizing unless you have a slow internet as they will be re-sized by FB.

I upload 'full' files and click the High Res box. If I click the 'Download Image' box they will be about 10% of the original file size.

The moral being, don't use FB for storage!

Cheers Philip, I did wonder about the High Res and Download options but not looked into them.

The reason I asked in the first place is because, when I upload full sized files, they look grainy and soft.....and no, that's not what my photos look like anyway!! :p

I presumed it was due to Facebooks auto re-sizing, and thought that if I resized and sharpened my self before I uploaded, that they'd look better.....I've tried a few different settings and have found some work better than others but haven't quite nailed the optimum!!

I'll try 720px and see how I get on.....thanks again to everyone for your comments!!

If you let facebook resize your photos especially if they have to resize them alot it won't be as good as if you resized them yourself atleast that's how it seems to me. The max FB alllows is 721...

2 threads running roughly asking the same thing.

What about the blog I pulled from FB stating it had gone from 720 to 2048? (I guess only if you click the HD box).

About a year or so ago FB bought a social network photo site where the key thing was HD photos. They didn't want the site (they closed it) but wanted the talent to improve FB photos.

As far as I can see in that time there have been 3 improvements - the black screen thingy, HD (ish), and recently facial recognition.

Has anyone uploaded two of the same photos, one full resolution and one resized to see if there is a great difference.

I'm not too convinced about FB photos but they are what they are and fulfil a purpose. I tend to dual upload to my Smugmug site and FB - simply *** people tend to look at FB rather than my own site.

Anyone any other thoughts re FB photos?

Not sure if you know this but you can get rid of the blackscreen thingy by hitting the F5 button on the keyboard...
