Facebook now owns your photos

In consideration of worry over losing my images I've come up with a new form of Copyright message that I feel gets the idea across really well - see what you think...

I read this article on the Metro. It just makes it easier for companies to use images without find the owner.
Surely the solution is to make sure there's an easy-to-find version online, with your details underneath and a reminder that it is not orphaned, not copyright free, and your licensing costs are some of the most reasonable available?

Image + Tineye = author and contact details.

Facebuk never has and never will take ownership of your possessions. They may take control of your mind though - just like adverts do, persuade you into their way of thinking.

its how I ended up with my Asian milf wife

Just uploaded photos of my credit card bill and mortgage statement. Glad Facebook will pay them for me.

I am really worried about this. Last week I was approached by a large firm wanting to use the Instagrammed photo of my dinner that I took three weeks ago in a national campaign. They were willing to pay many millions of pounds for it, but now I learn they can get it FREE OF CHARGE?

I tell you, I was so disgusted I put my foot through my monitor and sent Facebook the bill.

....downloaded and watermark easily removed with photoshop.....but Dave's been clever as the resulting image has turned out to be jar jar binks .... !!!!!

But if we don't post on Facebook, where else can we post where our family and friends can see?

you could post your photos on a blog and share the link with your friends and family if you were concerned over facbook policies

or email them

there are plenty of options - what did you used to do before facebook came along?

No..wait..this should be an easy one.... We..Erm.... We had free(r) speech, no forethought of photographing my dinner and mailing it anyone whatsoever.....and weren't afraid of being stop/search by the police because we were near them with a camera..........

That's not the answer is it.......doh!!

I don't upload directly to FB any more. I share with flickr. If I want them private then I mark them as private but share via FB so they can be seen by those people on there that I wish to see them. I'm hoping this means nothing is orphan as I don't think flickr strips out exif and sharing via FB shows where the image is from originally.

It still won't stop screen grabbing though.

Maybe a sodding great Watermark might though :D:D:D

Flickr strips EXIF data from all but the 'original' image.

Recently noticed details missing when uploading to my facebook page;

If I had my name in the Copyright or Caption in the Metadata in Lightrooom 3 - it would appear as the image description in all of the uploaded images.

Now I get nothing on any of them, been wrecking my brains for the last 2 hours thinking I had unchecked something in Lightroom! :(

Same here.. bit annoying.. Looks like FB has changed somehting and now doesnt show copyright info thats embedded in the pics :( Its not your software because I don't use lightroom ... it's facebook :(

Other mates i know are using the same software, 1 is even using some of my files (I shoot for a nightclub, a mate picks & uploads them onto their page) and he is having no problems! lol

I think bottom line if your after quality photos you are not going to be copying off FB. Yea, people share them or copy em but they really are rubbish quality. But anything online can be copied just like software and no amount of laws are going to stop it all.

eh? maybe in your circle.. but i have seen some fantastic pictures on facebook.. dont understand your message at all ?

Yea, just meaning if someone was trying to make poster prints ect... they are going to be awful quality. I can screenprint off Flicker in higher quality than FB... But this reminds me of the music industry do I give samples if so how long..ect

well now your widening the goalposts :) i would agree with you.. posters.. ... but thats the first I am hearing about posters.. 800 pixel pictures will print a decent 7x5 photo..

depends what people want.. I just dont agree with the blanket description of them being unusable..

I just noticed this, looks like it happened in the last 10 days. Thought it seemed odd that a normally very happy client was stripping out my metadata before uploading, so I just tried to do it myself and sure enough the copyright info is no longer showing.

I wonder what the point of that was?
