Never used it but I signed up to Twitter today, (something I thought I'd never do) only because it seemed the quickest way to find out about a firmware upgrade that was due fror release.

This place is enough :D...I don't do face**** or OI! or any other social networking too many weirdos on-line :suspect:

Personally, I use it as it was "intended" - to keep up with friends and family I can't be with all over the world.

Although, occasionally I'll overdo the statuses (stati?)

A lot of people use forums in a similar way though - to make announcements about what they have bought/sold/like/don't like etc etc ;)

Resistance is futile

Know absolutely zip about Facebook, but Seven of Nine is rather lovely, had a liking for Janeway too.

Speaking as a facebook regular AND a trekker . . . . I know EXACTLY what you mean!

Farcebook does seem to have infiltrated itself into everyday useage, but I guess that's technology for you. Like most "fads" in life I'm sure it'll all be a distant memory in a few year's time when something else better and more attractive come up.
For example . . . does anyone still "do" Second Life and MySpace these days? Remember how those were the media darlings in their time.
However, when it comes to keeping in contact with close friends and relative, it is a lot easier doing it all in Facebook than sending individual emails to them . . . while at the same time made me a whole lot lazier!

I use Facebook for friends, or people I speak to over the internet beforehand. I don't randomly add people, don't accept people who try to randomly add me and my profile is set to stu... I mean private.

Agreed, much better to join a forum and tell your innermost thoughts, become friendly with strangers, go to meetup groups, join in discussions and buzz around the spell of the 3 joined central powers (aka.. admins..), sooo much different.

:suspect: :p

Yes forums ok we all have a common interest, facebook draws you into other peoples interests you don't even know, but more importantly draws you into neighbours and associates at work who you just nod to, spreads local rumours like wild fire, leaves you asking yourself questions about who you can trust with your inner most thoughts both family and friends. it is the ultimate devil's advocate

I assume you don't use Google then, given that they track a hell of a lot more of your online activity than Facebook?

tracked yes, defined and pigeon holed yes, are google wide of the mark yes, building up a picture of random searches are all part and parcel of the game.

you know facebook is so different from a search or forum if it was the same no one would be on it.

glad I've never been on it, but heard the repercussions of those who have

on a lighter note going to switch off the internet, draw the curtains and retire to bed, hang everyone will know i've done that on here.:lol::lol:

You do know on Forums, the Admins/Mods, who are strangers, can grab your IP and track you to where you live?

I take back what I said on Twitter don't want a visit from the TP mafia.

This is not entirely true, at least not for most people, even those who use an ISP providing a static IP address.

They can track me to where I live as I have a subnet of routeable IP addresses at home and the whois data for them is complete and accurate.

Most people they can't, all it will tell you is the name of the ISP and possibly a city (if on a cable internet connection).

To get a postal address from an IP address generally needs a court order.

Not quite. You can be traced to your ISP, but not to your actual residence. To do that a warrant/subpoena would be needed for your ISP to reveal your address. All that BS'ing in the movies where they rattle a few keys and have someone's exact location due to an IP is nonsense - it doesn't work like that.

In my case though, the ISP is just literally down the road (can see the tower from the bottom of my lane actually).

and in mine it says I am in bolton when I am miles away from there - like 60 miles at least

In my case it does, as I explained above.

I have a /28 of routeable addresses (no NAT here, thank you. I spit on RFC1918) at home for which I maintain accurate data in whois (nb, I've just moved so it's actually wrong at the moment until I get around to correcting it, but I don't have a home internet connection at present as the order has not gone through Be for unbundling yet). So, with my one of IP addresses you can find my postal address by rattling a few keys.

Few enough people know what a static IP address is, fewer still have or want a routed subnet and of those many will fail to maintain accurate whois data, so I will very much be the exception. Normally a court order is needed.

Well as a ST person and a Facebook person ( BTW Marina is v nice in person ) I totally agree how ever I hate social network stuff like that so why ?

1) Only VERY select people make it on
2) Its used as a backup to a forum I use a lot ( sorry not here )
3) My main use is News.... yep I have moved from RSS to Facebook.... far better

Terran

PS Enterprise last night was the Borg episode.... shame it got canned.... dam good.
