Is there some form of self gratification in joining face book groups?
I notice that some people are on multiple groups, that is between 50 -100. Why?

And why join a group and have your settings to ignore all posts?
Why not just leave the group?

I have new posts turned off on the groups I belong to otherwise they tend to flood the news feed, but I do have
notifications if anyone replies to my posts or tags me
I do visit them everyday to check up on new stuff

I run a few good size groups and am a member of a few more. I have posts turned off for several groups so I can go in and read when I have time without my notifications getting silly. There are very few groups that I find work well on FB. I much prefer the forum format where it's easier to find posts again.

I’m in about 20 groups and have posts tuned off for about 15. They are speciality ones and I only need to see things when I need to see them, or have a question myself. They fill up my feed and I miss lots of other stuff otherwise. The rest are local traffic, dog lost, news and neighbourhood watch types, which I want to see all the time.

I am on this for the selling sites - i sell one or two things a month but dont want to be bombarded by all the other posts.

Is is turning off notifications the same as "ignore all posts" though?
Genuine question ...

I join groups because they can be useful to me. :)

I ignore their posts because I don't want my timeline full of crap. ;)

I can then look at all the posts once a day, comment if I want to (or not) without having to look the group up every time I want to see what is new.

If I leave the group I cannot comment and would have to look them up every day ...

... just how I use them for my convenience.

OK I can accept that some groups are useful. I'm on a couple of local hub ones
and a couple of hobby ones. oh yes then there is the "men only one" :D

It just seems strange to me though that people will join 50-100 groups,
its as if they collect the damned things.

Sometimes groups die off and if you are not seeing posts from them in your news feed you won't think to leave them.

Or sometimes you see a group post in your news feed and decide that you have lost interest or they start to become annoying then it is a 2 second operation to "hide all posts" where as leaving the group means that you have to go into the group to actually leave it, at least 5 seconds, but the result is the same from the perspective of what you see on your timeline. Time is precious and not to be wasted. :D

Is ignore the same as unfollow ?
Not sure what the ignore means in this respect.
To clarify I unfollow the group but it remains in my list so just one click a day to read new posts,
I do the same to "friends" who post endless links to their favourite causes etc. which I have no interest
in

i have joined a couple of car related groups and run a local buy n sell group with about 32,000 members which there is about 14,000 active members
the buy n sell group takes about 30 minutes a day to admin so no big deal

spend too much time on the car groups though
