Facebook getting out of hand (caveat emptor)

just read on the news thread of a couple who have had ALL there possessions stolen by a supposed removal firm that advertised on Facebook ,they turned up loaded the van quickly and then disappeared ,there Facebook page did as well , and this week my own daughter got a year old cat via a Facebook advert ,which it subsequently turns out has been run over by a car and she is now faced with hefty vets bills ,the previous owners Facebook page has also disappeared .is this the new age way to scam people .
Another friend on Facebook who loves badgers ,complained about a company destroying a badger sette and has this week had the police round to talk to him about his Facebook posts and possible slander charges ,has the bloody world gone mad

Libel...not slander.

The Police have got nothing to do with slander (or libel in this case, as it was written) - it's a civil offense pursued through the civil courts. The correct and normal course of action for the company would be to issue a 'cease and desist' letter from their lawyers.
The Police involvement suggests his posts may have been breaking criminal laws - were they threatening or inciting violence?

Libel can be a criminal offense too ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that criminal libel/seditious libel is a legal relic that's never used.

But if there's no likelihood of the CPS bringing a prosecution, why are the Police wasting their time threatening people? Does the company's CEO play golf with the Chief Inspector (allegedly)?

I don't know the full facts on that one ,I can only report was I see on his page ,but rather than the friendly place it was designed to be it seems to have become the market place for all sorts of devious And underground enterprises ,closed groups being at the crux of things there's a whole new economy taking place below the level of the authorities ,a few Facebook savvy villains making a lot of money and a lot of innocents getting ripped off ,the method of payment via PayPal for services/ goods on there troubles me as well . .personally I don't indulge but just look in and observe but sometimes the mind boggles at how stupid people are

There..that bit... Your blaming faceboook but its not,.,its the people who use it and to be perfectly honest everyhting you just described.. doesnt that reflect the society we live in.. facebook or not ?
 
why would you use facebook to hire a removal company? and buy a cat?

words fail me, facebook is just a place to post up pics and chat to mates

to be fair there are groups formed of people/businesses offering second hand goods and/or services in a particular area. bit like gumtree.

its not too bad really, we've sold a few bits in our towns group. beats paying ebay fees.

and I'm sure sure thats what it was intended to be, I suspect that us of a certain age use it that way. But it's morphed into a multimillion ££ business, and for the younger generation, it's obviously a way of life :rolleyes:
 
Doesn't matter what medium they use, there have always been criminals and con artists, the gullible and victims. You are responsible for what you do, if you want to buy a cat or hire a removal company (from anywhere) without doing any checks first then you must accept the consequences.
 
It's a wretched hive of scum and villainy :-)
 
Most of this "stupidness" is down to the lazy internet where people click and search and select.
People are getting out of touch with looking up companies in there local area, asking around for recommendations.

Well the first two scams would/could happen without Facebook as has been said above it mere coincidence that they have happened on Facebook, hell I have heard of the first scam happening long before Facebook existing..

As to the last one I guess it depends what your friend said to the company on Facebook, if what was said could be considered or constituted a threat then of course the police should get involved...no different to if someone physically entered a business premises and said the same
