Faceberk Down.

The thing about this other life, is that we will never see it, and it will never see us.

Like the excitement that we have found a planet in a different galaxy. It is 23 million light years away.

Which means the light we are seeing from it is 23 million years old...

Isn't that discovery a "We think we might have found a planet in a distant galaxy" rather than a definite "We have found etc."?

Yes, it is.

But the light is still 23 million years old :D

I expect most people here already know that the Facebook organisation has now changed its corporate brand to 'Meta'.

As far as I know, the sub brand names 'Instagram', 'WhatsApp', and 'Facebook' are to remain.

As I am currently evolving and progressing my Instagram presence, that's good news for me personally.

Instagram seems to be working fine for me.

Edit: Actually messages don’t seem to be working consistently.

I just read that Instagram and Facebook are down again.
.... No problems whatsoever all day and evening so far (9:15pm) with either Facebook or Instagram. You must be reading fake news somewhere.

Permanently this time? One can hope :).
.... That's not a very nice thing to say or wish. Just because you don't like them and unless I am mistaken, you don't use either of them anyway.

From a source an old fossil like you would trust.

.... How dare you make such assumptions dear boy?

I don't read the Daily Mail, never have done, and I don't buy or read any newspapers anyway.

My Downdetector App graphs show that most of the internet, not just the Facebook group, was down for a short period earlier this evening. Such occasional down times are quote normal and nothing to get alarmed about.

Just rattling your chain Robin ;), I knew youd be along. Unfortunately I have to make extensive use of WhatsApp because family use it, I also use Facebook occasionally for the same reaso, and news of friends. I do use Instagram but find the format very unsatisfactory for photos.

I actually set up (though it’s now defunct) a secret group on Facebook :).

.... As with most apps, it's Horses-for-Courses and each of Facebook / WhatsApp / Instagram have their pros and cons (putting aside whether they are not used for 'moral' reasons).

I did some tests last week with a professional photographer friend who shoots digital Canon DSLR and 5x4 cameras. I sent him exactly the same 2048px longest side 300dpi image both via FB Messenger and WhatsApp because in gifting some of my pics to surfers, I was curious whether there was any difference in delivered image quality. The result was no visible differences whatsoever to the naked eye on a big desktop screen but a substantial difference in image sizes. Surprisingly, Facebook Messenger reduced it the most from 2048px to 1242px/353 KB/72ppi and WhatsApp to 1600px/566 KB. He was interested to know as well and we often help each other.

Btw, WhatsApp is also available (free) as a desktop app for both Mac and Windows - Download from their website: https://www.whatsapp.com/download
I find this very convenient while using other apps on my desktop Mac.

Regarding Instagram, I much prefer using it on my iPad as the screen is larger than my iPhone. I expect you already know that the image format you upload is no longer restricted to square, it is only initially displayed in the square grid and expands accordingly. If you upload wider than a 16x9 aspect, Instagram will automatically crop your image. Likewise on 3x2 portrait orientations. Personally I find Instagram inspiring for viewing other artists etc and also for seeing a mini portfolio of one's own best efforts.

.... I'm not sure that everyone welcomes my contributions to Hot Topics. I often enjoy challenging the dogma and trying to open people's minds to other points of view.

I mostly use WhatsApp Web on the iPad in Safari though it doesn’t always work properly with some attachments compared with the phone and it’s a bit clunky especially compared with FaceTime or Signal both which have proper iPad apps. Facebook has been promising a tablet app for years but I guess they don’t have enough money to implement one :(. I use FaceTime, WhatsApp and Signal for videocalling and FaceTime is much the best and of course works on iPad too.

Instagram would be much better if it stuck to square for me :(.

.... At the risk of telling you something you already know, when uploading any image to Instagram, on an iPad* you can select the arrow heads in bottom lefthand corner to make your image display as a square and pinch-finger-gesture to compose into that square. Subsequently, the Instagram page displays your images presented as square crops irrespective of your original aspect ratios.

*I only use my iPad when uploading to Instagram, having copied various albums regularly to it from my desktop Mac.

HTH :)

Perhaps I phrased that badly, I mean better if all images were square!

.... An excuse to buy a square format Hasselblad? Quality bits of kit!

Been there done that :). My second camera after my Kodak Folding Brownie (6x9) was a Reflex Korelle (6x6) probably made around 1936. Eventually the shutter failed and I took it to pieces but couldn’t see how to fix it so it stayed in bits in its (apparently) crocodile skin leather case for about 50 years :(.

I find the only sensible way to use an iPhone is holding it vertically and setting format to square. You can take square videos on the 11 too ;). YMMV!
